Laburnum Primary School

Laburnum Primary School (LPS) is located in Blackburn in Melbourne's eastern suburbs. It was established in 1964 and at present, it is the largest primary school in the Whitehorse Council Network. Located in Janet Street, Blackburn, the school is set in a bushland setting which flows naturally into the parkland of Blacks Walk, a part of the Blackburn Creek Lands. In 2006 a current teaching staff of 35 and an enrollment of approximately 650 children, divided into 28 classes from Prep to grade 6.
LPS has recently completed a major building upgrade that includes eight new classrooms with computer and office rooms, a Reading Recovery room, storage and administrative areas, a large art room, and a multi-purpose hall containing a full size basketball court, state-of-the-art stage area, and a canteen. Other buildings in the school include the library, LOTE room, and a large Out of School Hours Child Care Centre. The school also have a separate Performing Arts Centre that includes teaching spaces for high standard instrumental programs and for the Prep-6 music program.
The school grounds include a large oval with soccer goalposts, and asphalt areas where games and sports are played. There are two adventure playgrounds that have been erected in separate parts of the grounds in order to provide recreation for children of all ages. Outdoor Physical Education space exists on the oval, and in the theatre-style teaching space overlooking the school's rear basketball courts.
Recently the school students competed in Pacific School Games and also competed in Tournament of Minds Australian Finals.
