The Labour Party of Northern Ireland was formed prior to the 1985 local government election in which it ran several council candidates, the most prominent being Paddy Devlin, a former SDLP councillor and Northern Ireland assembly member. None of the candidates were successful and in 1987 it merged with the Northern Ireland Labour Party, Ulster Liberal Party and the United Labour Party to form a party known as Labour '87 or Labour Party 1987 with the aim of campaigning for a united Labour Party. It hoped to build links with the British Labour Party, but these came to nothing. The group ran unsuccessful candidacies in local elections and the 1989 European Parliament election, after which the Labour '87 coalition seems to have been dropped.
