La Sagesse

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

La Sagesse is a Catholic private school set in the suburb of Jesmond, Newcastle upon Tyne, England.

It is now coeducational.

It is committed to ensuring that all of the pupils and students are given the opportunity to achieve academic success, regardless of their ability, and to develop their talents beyond the classroom; we are proud of our achievements.

One of the strengths of La Sagesse School is its people; it is only by meeting the pupils and staff that you can really appreciate the supportive, co-operative and friendly atmosphere.

The curriculum is of fundamental importance to the quality of education a child receives and La Sagesse takes pride in the variety and depth of the curriculum on offer throughout the school.

The National Curriculum is broadly followed at the school. In the Junior Department French and dance are taught from Nursery. Younger children also benefit from specialist teachers in many areas. Spanish is introduced in Year 8 and careful guidance is given when students begin to make key decisions from Year 9 onwards.

Across the school, music and drama enhance the curriculum and specialist instrumentalist lessons including violin, piano, flute, drums and guitar, as well as singing, are available. PE is taught from Nursery to Sixth Form underlining the importance given to health and fitness by the school. RE too is a key subject in the curriculum and underpins the ethos of the school.

"Throughout the Junior Department, pupils of all abilities, including those requiring special provision, make very good progress ... At every stage of the Senior Department, pupils make very good, sometimes substantial progress" (Independent Schools Inspectorate Report January 2004)

It has a Christian ethos generates the values we all share and our daily life at school reflects the priority we give to respect for others. While our foundation is Roman Catholic, boys and girls of many different religions and cultures are welcomed into our school community. Through this cultural mix our pupils have an increased understanding of the diverse world in which they live.

In both the Junior and Senior departments there is a School Council where representatives of different year groups within the school discuss issues of concern to them. Our House system plays a vital role in enabling pupils to develop a range of skills. Co-operation, teamwork, motivation all play a part in inter-house activities which include swimming galas, netball and hockey tournaments and drama and poetry competitions.
