lala.com is a new online music distribution company that allows members to legally trade CDs by USPS mail for $1, create their own online radio stations, and buy new CDs at wholesale prices. Lala donates 20% of all CD trading revenue back to the artist through a charitable fund set up called the "Z" Foundation. Lala also recently acquired independent, online rock and roll radio station, WOXY. Lala is based out of Palo Alto, CA and is venture funded by Bain Capital and Ignition Partners. Founded by serial entrepenuer Bill Nguyen, lala.com launched in an invite-only beta phase on March 7th, 2006. Garnering much press attention and a rapid influx of members, lala officially launched in open-beta on June 8th, 2006. As of December 2006 there are currently around 200,000 members registered on lala.com and over 500,000 CDs have been traded since the company's launch. The company has a staff of 23 people.

1. Members sign up at http://www.lala.com
Membership is FREE and members pay only $1 (plus $0.75 shipping) each time they receive a CD.
2. Create a "Have List" and a "Want List"
Members list the CDs they have, and the CDs they want from a catalog of over 1.8 million titles.
3. Shipping CDs
Members receive CD requests from other members for CDs they've listed on their Have List, and CDs are shipped in pre-paid lala envelopes
4. Receiving CDs
Members receive CDs from their Want List from other members the same way.
[edit] Lala.com aquires WOXY
In October of 2006, lala.com acquired independent, online rock and roll radio station WOXY. For over two decades, WOXY has been broadcasting independent rock and roll music, first on the FM dial in Cincinnati in 1983, and starting in 1998 as a pioneer of Internet radio. It’s considered one of the first modern rock stations in the country, and over the years has received accolades from Rolling Stone, Spin, USA Today and Entertainment Weekly. WOXY was named Best Internet Radio Station by CitySearch and Internet Radio Station of the Year at the Plug Independent Music Awards.
[edit] The "Z" Foundation
Inspired by Charlie Chaplin's visionary creation of the Motion Picture Relief Fund and United Artists, the "Z" Foundation is a non-profit that seeks to unite working musicians to address the economic challenges they face. Like Chaplin's endeavors to assist and empower entertainment industry workers nearly a century ago, the "Z" Foundation is a collaborative effort.
The "Z" Foundation will initially be funded with monthly contributions of between $10,000 and $50,000 from lala.com and its members (actual amounts may vary based on CD trading volume on lala.com.) The "Z" Foundation will focus on providing health and dental care that is often inaccessible to working musicians.
For the first time, musicians will receive economic support directly from their fans. Each time a lala.com member trades a CD from a 1.8 million-title catalog with another member, 20% of the trading revenue will be contributed to performing artists.
