L.A. Weekly is a free weekly tabloid-sized newspaper (a so-called "alternative weekly") in Los Angeles, California. It was founded in 1978 by Jay Levin. It is owned by Village Voice Media (formerly New Times Media), the parent company of other major weeklies such as the New York City's Village Voice, San Francisco's SF Weekly, and the OC Weekly of Orange County, California. It is distributed every Thursday.
A major source of financial support for the L.A. Weekly, as for many alternative weeklies, is advertising by "adult" services, such as phone sex providers, escort services and other sex workers, and strip clubs.
