[edit] Name
'I had a dog for 16 years, and I called her Lamb because she was like the lamb in "Mary Had a Little Lamb" -- she followed me everywhere I went. So then I thought Lamb would be a cool name for my clothing line, because it would be like my dog living on through my clothes. So when we did the bags with Le Sportsac we decided that L should stand for Love, A for Angel, M for Music and B for Baby. So there's a few meanings to it.'
[edit] LAMB Bags
The first bag Gwen ever bought as a teeenager was from Lesportsac. 'The bags are totally separate. I got sent one of the LeSportsac bags. I used that bag so much, and I guess they saw me with it and said, "Hey, do you want to make your own bag for yourself?" I said, "Hell yeah, dude," and made this leopard bag with green trim and I had that on tour and I loved it. And they called me back and said, "Hey, what would you think about being a guest designer?" I never collaborated with a corporation. I get asked all the time to be the shampoo girl or the makeup girl or the cola girl. I don't want to sell things. I'd feel too guilty. I'm Catholic. But with LeSportsac as guest designer, the title sounded so nice, and I am a designer.
Gwen's main focus was the designs as far as colors. It wasn't Gwen's idea to have love angel music baby scrolled all over the bags and Gwen had no say in the pricing or where the bags were made avaliable to buy. 'Just so you know I was a GUEST designer. That means I designed the colors etc. I don't have anything to do with the pricing where the are sold, shipped etc. I just tried to makes some cool bags that I would like. '-Gwen For the clothes Gwen said the line would be a collection inspired by her own clothes (because Gwen can't keep all her outfits as she has so many she takes poloroids of her outfits instead).
[edit] How Gwen Got Started
Gwen has been making her own clothes from a young age and spent alot of time in fabric shops as she grew up. Gwen first mentioned a clothing line in the Spring 2002 issue of Elle Girl. When asked whether she would consider a clothing line Gwen responded with: 'I talk about it all the time but it's hard to do a lot of things well at once. I'm so busy and I have so much passion for what I'm doing. So I think that if I do a clothing line, it has to be like everything else I do, home grown; it has to be real. I wouldn't do it just to make money, although I could easily. All I would have to do is say the words "Here's my accessory line" and it would be nuts.'
[edit] Release
There are two different parts of Gwen's clothing line, the bags with Le Sportsac where Gwen was a guest designer (out August/September 2003) and her main clothing line (Spring 2004) In January it was announced that they line would be titled L.A.M.B and first Gwen would release a line of bags while teaming up with Le Sportsac
On the 17th April 2003 Gwen posted on the official site: 'I have been working super hard on my L.A.M.B. clothing line. I think you will start to hear more about it and see it soon. It has been a total blast and a lot of work but it has also been a real cool creative outlet.'
In May Gwen wrote: ' I got my first LAMB bag sample from LE SPORTSAC and it feels so good to have it in my hands after a year of working on it.'
June 26th 2003 Gwen writes: I finally got my personal collection of my LAMB/lesportsac bags. It is very exciting. I had a big party at my house with about 60 girls (girls only). It was very civilized and cute and I gave all my friends bags. So fun. They have been calling me all week telling me people have been stopping them on the street and asking how to get them. I spent the last two days fitting the spring 2004 LAMB collection. It is a grueling process but so exciting to see the clothes after all the drawings. We started to get inspiration for fall today. I can't believe we have to do it so soon.
March 2004 L.A.M.B. hits finally hits stores. Gwen always works two seasons ahead.
Gwen also worked with Zaldy on the line I met Zaldy, and he started helping with some of my designs. Collaboration is everything when it comes to design. I hired him and the guys from Nice Collective. It was like college—we all came together and showed what we did, and I think we created an amazing second collection. So I asked Zaldy to stay on because I never want him to go. I love him. He's so talented.
[edit] Celebrities
Gwen herself has carried the bags on numerous occasions namely the premiere of Charlie's Angels. Gwen hosted a party and she gave bags to all her of friends including Sharon Osbourne. Other celebs seen sporting LAMB are Carmen Electra, Paris Hilton Pamela Anderson and Halle Berry. Cameron Diaz has been photographed wearing a velvour LAMB jacket. Gwen also sent a bag to Shirley Manson. Gavin, just as excited, gave out the bags to his female friends.
