[edit] The name

The municipality (originally the parish) is named after an old (and disappeared) farm Leirheimr. The first element is leirr 'clay', the last element is heimr 'homestead, farm'. Thus: 'the farm built on clay ground'. The addition is skógr m 'wood', and the meaning of the whole name is 'the woodlands around the farm Leirheimr.'

[edit] Coat-of-arms

The coat-of-arms is from modern times (1957). It shows a waterwheel. (The timber saws, driven by waterwheels, used to be important for the municipality.)
