Løgstør
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Løgstør is a municipality (Danish, kommune) in North Jutland County on the Jutland peninsula in northern Denmark. The municipality, including the island of Livø, covers an area of 218 km², and has a total population of 10,270 (2005). Its mayor is Jens Lauritzen, a member of the Venstre (Liberal Party) political party.
The main town and the site of its municipal council is the town of Løgstør.
Neighboring municipalities are Aars and Nibe to the east and Farsø to the south. Løgstør lies primarily on the south shores at a bend of the Limfjorden, but a small portion of the municipality lies on the north shore of that same bend on the island of Vendsyssel-Thy. The waters separating the two parts of the municipality is called Agger Strait (Agger Sund). The strait separates the main body of the Jutland peninsula and the region known as Himmerland from the island of Vendsyssel-Thy at this point. Løgster's municipal neighbor to the north is Fjerritslev.
A bridge connects the municipality near Tolstrup to the town of Aggersund on the far side of the Agger Strait.
The island of Livø lies off the municipalities western shores, and is partially a protected nature reserve.
By January 1, 2007 Løgstør municipality will cease to exist as the result of Kommunalreformen ("The Municipality Reform" of 2007). It will be merged with existing Farsø, Aalestrup, and Aars municipalities to form the new Vesthimmerland municipality. This will create a municipality with an area of 815 km² and a total population of 39,176 (2005). The new municipality will belong to the new Region Nordjylland ("North Jutland Region").
