[edit] History
The station began life in 1979 as a Class A on 103.9 as KRAD, simulcasting KRAD-AM 1590 (now KCNN).
The station flipped to album-oriented rock (predecessor to the classic rock radio format) in 1981 as KRRK "Rock 104", and KZLT in the spring of 1985 on the 104.3 frequency. Station owner Dave Norman changed the format to light Adult contemporary (AC) as "K-Lite" under the KZLT call sign, increased power to 100,000 watts from a transmitter west of Fisher, Minnesota. KZLT and KCNN were moved from the transmitter/studio complex in East Grand Forks to the Cass Gilbert designed Great Northern Depot at 667 DeMers Avenue in historic downtown Grand Forks.
In late 1999, the station repositioned itself with a Hot AC format as "Cities 104.3". Lightning struck KZLT's transmitter on May 31, 2001, keeping the station off-air for a week. Cities 104.3 began broadcasting again at low-power until a new transmitter was completed in October 2001, when an 80's based classic rock format as "Z104" was introduced. In 2003, KZLT changed back to its long time adult contemporary format as "Breeze 104.3".
January 2006, KZLT flipped to its current incarnation "More Music 104.3" with an Adult Top 40 format competing with Clear Channel's Top 40 station KKXL-FM 92.9 "XL93".
Although KZLT's music leans toward the Adult Top 40 direction (similar to WSTR-FM/Atlanta and WWAX/Duluth), the station is often classifed as Top 40 and Hot AC Though KZLT is more pop and rock oriented than most Top 40 stations, it plays hip hop and R&B songs occasionally, which is not typical for an average Hot AC station, so it is sometimes classified as a Top 40/CHR station.
Over the years the station has been home to some of the region's best known personalities, including: Scott Hennen, Duane Sanden, Donovan Blue, Rick Thomas, Matt Opsahl, Tony Hart, Moose Richards, Mark Anthony, Stu Jeffries, Scott Swygman, Tim Hennessey and others.
