[edit] ESIGN

Thanks for the note on Privasign. I am trying to put more relevant info in there but am so busy. I would like to ask for some advice though. I have spent the last 9 months or so researching electronic signature laws in the US. I just finished a major project. i would like to carry some of that info to wiki. But the Electronic signature and Digital Signature pages need serious help. Please see my suggestions in their discussions sections. The definitions are wrong. I am new to wiki, so how do I make a major change to a large page without someone getting mad? WHo do I talk to? This is a major change that would affect several statements on both pages. Hi! I wanted to let you know that I nominated the above article for AfD. Since the prod tag I placed was removed, AfD is the appropriate venue for discussing whether or not it should be deleted. Given that you re-proded it, I thought you might wish to vote in the discussion. Here is a link to the nomination: Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Manjob. For your sweet message on my talk page. Made me smile. Heh, I just played some Bach today, and convinced myself that I'm a terrible student violinist as well. From one violinist to the next...best wishes!!--ViolinGirl 20:14, 30 April 2006 (UTC)

I'm trying to perform a triple-stop (comp) version of Gavotte en Rondeau, myself. Just for amusement, outside my regular practice pieces. The standard double is fine, but my fingers start tripping over eachother when I add more to what's already (imho) a moderately complex piece. ~Kylu (u|t) 22:41, 30 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] User:Kylu/plain

Took a little playing, but I figured out a way to actually do something that I've been wanting to do ever since I started putting those [edit] boxes on my little box things.

  • I only found out just now that there's a {{edit}} template. *sigh*
  • I dislike the little "class='external text'" boxes that show up when you link to certain sites (count and log, for instance) on Wikipedia.
  • So, the template in the title here just removes said "external text" box. I'm proud I made a discovery, though I imagine everyone else is going, "Uh, yeah, so?"
  • For those of you who wonder what I'm prattling on about: Just click here Yahoo!
  • Personally, I think it's kinda nifty. I may just abandon it to make some generic templates like {{plain-edit}}, {{usercounts|user}} and {{userlogs|user}} ... unless they're already made, of course!

How did you find out that I am not stupid? Was it that my name was spelled correctly? Or, maybe I overdid the misspelling? How did you find out. Or maybe you just want to use reverse psycology on me? --Article Editor of Wikipedia the Free Encyclopedia 04:48, 5 May 2006 (UTC)

Well, you did manage to use proper punctuation in this reply. Really, though, I'd like to welcome you into constructive editing of Wikipedia. While I suppose a little "playing" is fun from time to time, don't you think it's worth it to contribute to one of the most worthy causes humanity has devised? I really don't think I'm exaggerating. I have a fairly simple list of the greatest accomplishments that we as a race can attain:
  • Acheiving the stars and ensuring the survival of human-origined intelligence past the end of our solar system.
  • Centralized cultural and intellectual exchange (upon this road, Wikipedia is as notable as Armstrong's moonwalk).
  • Development of a central, compassionate, universal system of government which respects the rights of all life.
  • Universal, yet individual attainment of compassion for others. (Which is why I volunteer for the Red Cross and charitable organizations when I'm not out performing).
Don't think I'm a goody two-shoes, though. Trust me, I've got days where I'm a real demon-spawn. *cackle*
Anyway, I liken vandalizing Wikipedia to stealing band-aids from Red Cross volunteers for kicks: It's not constructive at all, it's not actually that fun or funny, and what's worse, from a totally selfish point of view, when you actually need it for your own use, it may not be available or in ideal function. Imagine going to the doctor with a large cut on your arm and being told, "We don't have any bandages because someone thought it'd be funny to take them all. Here, have a paper towel instead." Imagine needing to do research in school or for work, and when you look up the entry in a book the pages you need were ripped out and replaced by a post-it saying, "HA HA" or coming here and finding that the article on molecular biology was replaced with "YOU GOT PWNED!"
Obviously, people are welcome (and encouraged!) to edit to make Wikipedia better, but harming it... it's like shooting yourself in the foot, you know?
So, how about it? Willing to help us with this huge project? There's no minimum amount you have to volunteer, and if you'd like I can help you fix your userpage... mine's not pretty, really, but I'm working on it. If you want, we can start from scratch. Let me welcome you to Wikipedia. :)
~Kylu (u|t) 05:30, 5 May 2006 (UTC)
Very convincing. Let me think about it. By the way, when you said that thing about bandaids, well, I don't use bandaids, because they fall off and they are annoying. I just let my cuts dry in the air. And also, If I needed a book, and someone put a post-it and ripped out all of the pages, I would get a new book. And how did you find out that I am not stupid? --Article Editor of Wikipedia the Free Encyclopedia 05:56, 5 May 2006 (UTC)
I heartily suggest fabric band-aids and using a quality antibiotic ointment. It really does help wounds heal cleaner with minimal scarring. As far as your intellect, you have a habit of mixing "leet" capitalization with what appears to be purposely false misspellings. People tend to do this when they're wanting to appear inexperienced. As far as the book example goes, I don't know about you but I don't make enough (starving artist, I am) to go about and buy new books whenever someone defaces an old one. If it were in a shared resource (such as a public library) I'd be far more outraged than if they ruined one of my personal copies, since the library is a non-profit public resource. It's one of the few purely benevolent public institutions we have. ~Kylu (u|t) 06:04, 5 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Thank you

Hello Kylu,

I would like to thank you for your pleasent greeting, I really wasn't expecting a welcome at all unless by automated service... And you search out and greet five people a day? Orz

I look forward to perusing some of your articles.

Aegithalos 11:23, 6 May 2006 (UTC)

Well, I try to average five people a day. Usually this means two or three days will go by, then I greet a whole bunch of people all at once. I do, however, try to be sincere in my greetings, and I attempt to concentrate on those users who have already made positive contributions and have put some sort of information on their user page. While I realize that this tends to cut out a lot of potentially promising editors, it lets me concentrate on those editors who have the most promise.
Part of the reason might be that if I just went down the "newbie" list and put a greeting on everyone that made an account, I'd basically be adding to harddrive space and not much else. I understand statistically that most editors register once, edit from zero to two times, then never log back in. Selectivity has never been one of my strong traits, as I tend to feel it's a negative, artificial discrimination, but in this case I put up with it since it serves a valuable function.
Have fun on Wikipedia!

[edit] Thank You!

The greeting was very kind, It's nice to know there are people like you out there. --JPredham 16:13, 6 May 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for the thank-you! I noticed the subatomic physics and QCD interests and, while not completely related, I think you've got a more thorough/up-to-date physics background than I do. Remind me to pester you about this little question I've got regarding mass loss in Hawking radiation events...I never could understand how the primary energy transfer worked. :)
~Kylu (u|t) 16:21, 6 May 2006 (UTC)
I'd love to help if I can. Is your question concerning the initial energy required to produce the quantum fluctuations or the energy which is tunneled out of the black hole? --JPredham 19:11, 6 May 2006 (UTC)
Well, "Yes", allow me to explain my understanding of Hawking radiation via virtual particle emission:
  • The quantum activity at the border of the event horizon, a set of virtual particles (one matter, one antimatter) is created, typically owing to vacuum energy.
  • One particle escapes, one is caught within the singularity.
  • Normally, I would think this would cause a net positive change to the singularity mass, as it's acquiring a particle.
  • In my questioning over at Talk:Hawking radiation I was given an approximation of an answer with the edit summary comment being, "Virtual particles are an artifact of one way of working through the math. Multiple approaches exist" by Christopher Thomas.
  • In the real world, there is some sort of activity going on at the event horizon. Hawking (I read the book and related papers) states that it's due to realized virtual particles in the event horizon vicinity (I'd assume a sphere-shell with a thickness around the epsilon area of zero...) That's fine, I can accept partial answers, "we don't know", and similar answers. I am not so tolerant of "it doesn't matter" however. :D
  • One particle escapes, one is caught by the singularity. Hawking says this results in a net loss of mass to the singularity. But why?
  • I am personally of the opinion that the vacuum energy is not tolerant of the theft of energy and drains the singularity of the equivalent, due to its being the closest massive object to the loss (path of least resistance). This drain is equivalent to the mass-energy of the two virtual particles, hence the loss of mass to the singularity equal to that of two particles while it gains the mass of one: Net loss, one particle mass.
  • Basically, I guess I'm asserting that I think the two energies (the initial energy creating the vacuum fluctuations which result in virtual particles, and the lost mass-energy of the singularity) are in fact one in the same, even though they are either causally backwards or resulting in a local net negative energy during the transaction.
Please keep in mind that by occupation, I'm not a astrophysics theorist, and the moment you mention scalar fields I'm completely and utterly lost. So, does this sound like I've got a grasp of the mechanism, or have you heard an alternate explanation which makes more sense/does not violate causality?
~Kylu (u|t) 01:39, 7 May 2006 (UTC)
Your take on the matter matches everything that I've ever read, and I don't believe, conflicts with Hawking's theory.
  • We know these quantum fluctuations must occur everywhere in space time as a field energy of zero will result in it's derivative (with respect to time) being zero, thus violating the uncertainty principle.
  • This zero point energy must be such an immense and continuous process of creation and annihilation, that when half of a virtual particle/antiparticle pair crosses an event horizon, a instantaneous reaction occurs in this system which is strong enough to literally rip energy out of the black hole to repay the debt of creation not appeased by the annihilation of those particles in the first place.
  • My understanding is that the energy tunneled out of the black hole is equal to the energy required to create the virtual particles and the energy which would've resulted from their annihilation had they combined. As the black hole only absorbs one of the particles its net mass loss is equivalent to the energy of half the creation energy, or the energy attributed to one of the virtual particles.
  • As for Mr. Thomas' comment, I assume he's indicating that virtual particles are as yet, unobserved, and only represent a representation of the energy behavior around black holes which we have observed.
This is my comprehension (right or wrong) and I hope it answers your question. If not let me know and we'll figure it out together. Thanks again, --JPredham 14:40, 7 May 2006 (UTC)
Man, you'd think quantum astrophysics would be an easier field of study. :P
Anyway, I think my main concern was that I don't understand the energy transfers involved, assuming that I am indeed correct in the rest of the theory. Is there a reverse causal relationship or a negative energy coefficient involved in the energy transfer (given that you've got an area where you temporarily have a negative vacuum energy due to the creation of a nonannihilated particle pair)? I'm a bit iffy on that point, but the other obvious approach... positive causality... makes me a bit nervous to even consider.
The positive causality approach would be, in my eyes, that the energy to create the virtual particles is drained from the singularity before the particles are created. The problem with this is that the histories (lightcone) of the particles, not being predetermined to seperate, requires that this be a normal interaction near any massive object.
Would not the positive causality approach indicate that you've got virtual particles popping about and annihilating each other even inside the shell-space of existing atomic nuclei? Would not this indicate that there's a constant "temporary" negative vacuum energy drain being taken on every massive object? That's a bit much of a stretch for this amateur to conceive of. Let Hawking and Kakau and Thorne come up with that idea. I'll just be a "me-too"ist that claims prior conception.
~Kylu (u|t) 23:14, 7 May 2006 (UTC)
Ooohhh...(shudder)...positive causality. I would think the effect-cause path would mean one of two things, either 1.) quantum tunneling involves some sort of wormhole that can violate general relativity in order to keep quantum fluctuations continuous, or 2.) that a black hole must tunnel energy at a constant rate to precede a nonannihilated particle pair. But what would happen if they did annihilate? Where I get the most confused is when you consider it all as a big loop, is energy constantly being either annihilated or tunneled to pay a negative energy debt or are particles constantly being created to manifest a positive vacuum energy? I don't quite follow you on the energy draining of massive objects only because I would think energy would be tunneled only after the particle had no conceivable way of annihilating with its anti-twin without traveling faster than light. It's all beyond me, but I hope we do find the answer someday. Thanks for a great discussion and sorry I couldn't help more. --JPredham 23:59, 8 May 2006 (UTC)
Ah, sorry, I meant massive in the atomic physics sense of "that which has mass" not colliquial "that which has a helluva lot of mass". We'll pretend that Higgs bosons attract vacuum energy fluctuations or something! *laughs*
Anyway, that's the thing... I would prefer the negative causality version of the theory, mostly because even though it doesn't make sense and is a nasty chunk of theoretical physics, it's at least better than the whole-of-existance-changing positive causality version. I'd rather beleive in time travel than my mass constantly changing due to particles popping in and out of existance that I have no control over.
I suppose technically positive causality is more QM-friendly, though I dislike the inferences. Anyway, glad you enjoyed listening to me ramble on about things! ~Kylu (u|t) 00:13, 9 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Your comments

Very Pink! I logged in this user name again and saw your comments on the associated user page. I appreciate your welcome and recognition that I could be useful here. Curiously, I had just visited this page about the poor quality of pages when randomly tested when I returned to find your comments. There are specific reasons I reviewed pages, leaving critical comments but not editing pages. One reason is articulated in the artice you linked in your comments, which referred to the addictive nature of editing here.

Addiction is defined by harmful nature of a repetitive behavior. If it's not harmful, it's not addiction, at least according to professional societies of addiction specialists. I'm not interested in hurting myself to provide free information that is already free anyway. Very little of what is on wikipedia can not be found elsewhere on the Web. It's interesting to see it all in one namespace, but I wonder who benefits -- readers or those who enjoy the rewards of adding more information. Looking at the slipshod work evident when one flips between random pages, writers seem to be adding information largely for the thrill of it. I fear some might only add information until they have enough edits to gain admin status, and then they turn their attention to more rewarding obsessions, such as fighting the vandals that walk through the unlocked door 24/7. To me, this appears like the war on terror or the war on drugs as an open-ended conflict with no real effort to find a solution for the problem at hand.

That is the other reason I might leave notes critiquing articls but am unlikely to do much editing. I don't want to fight about it. It's not so much the rank and file editors as those who have some knowledge of the system and the power to prevent me from responding after they characterize me in a negative light. I got away with critiquing a few articles, somewhat to my suprise, but I sincerly doubt I could begin to criticise administrative actions without one of the 900 deciding to block my user account. Sure, maybe I could then turn around and ask for mercy from another similarly empowered sysop, but that would aggravate the addictive nature of the endeavor, specifically the harmful aspect of the addition. I would be wasting time in pursuit of more of the addictive agent. It would mean I'm not editing, but wasting my time begging somebody who might not have any academic or social skills outside of this somewhat odd context for permission to play in a context where the primary purpose, as far as I can tell, is to add information for the fun of it.

Already I'm spending time responding at length when I had better uses for my time, like looking at today's newborn foal -- maybe the pink caught my eye, but here I am. Tommorrow it will be a two-day foal, the wet of the womb dried from its hair, and the wobble of a newborn no longer evident in its stance. No matter how unique this project, a look at that foal today is worth more than this could ever be. I was harmed just loggin into this site because it distracted me from what is real. I will never have another chance to have see that foal as one day old horse. This encyclopedia is not the least neutral in it's point of view -- it presents the idea that viewing this encyclopedia is better than viewing anything else. I am harmed in the process. If I am going to donate intellectual and editorial skills to a charity, I would prefer to find a charity that won't waste my donation. I see a lot of wasted effort here, and don't find much of value to justify the wastage. Thanks again for your welcome message, but now I need to avert my eyes toward things more beautiful, more real and more reflective of the integrity that is our universe. Xientist 05:42, 7 May 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for the reply, it's always nice to see people take this place seriously, and it's especially nice to see people who realize that just because I have a fixation on a color doesn't mean that I'm not more intellectual than a fruit fly. :D
I think on the page I referenced, she either means colliquial addiction (being self-forced to repeat a behaviour) as opposed to clinical addiction, though I can certainly see some editors skirt clinical addiction here. While I agree that some editors (possibly many) add information with ulterior motivations such as gaining adminship or simple editcountitis, some editors (I consider myself one of these) beleive that there is a greater good and an ongoing goal within Wikipedia. I see it as a neverending battle, of course, but one which is worth fighting. I'll admit, it sounds a bit idealistic, but I think that already it's a great source of information (which should be externally verified, like any information source) but someday it will become an asset of all humanity, a resource that will transcend these simple roots. As far as your ability to edit goes, please feel free to be bold in your editing. Generally speaking, as long as you remain civil, edit in good faith, and don't engage in edit wars and other practices, blocking isn't something you have to worry about. There are, of course, accidents, and when vandals strike it's simple enough to remove the vandalism using easily-gained tools. This is, and always will be, a massive work in progress.
This all is, of course, your call and perogative. If you choose to leave, obviously nobody is going to chain you to a computer and force you to edit. If you come back in a few months and spellcheck an article for the heck of it, that is appreciated. If you come back in a year and put a picture of your puppy on your userpage, that's fine. If you want to add citations to an article on your favorite biologist, go right ahead. This is all volunteer and people are free to come and go as they please.
This said, I'd hope you don't forget about Wikipedia. Maybe someday you'll choose to return.
Maybe the pink made you remember. :)

No problem. Done. I myself had the same problem the first time I placed an AfD on an article. Thank ya so much! Looks like my first AfD is going to go through.
I actually read the page, but apparently when I was going through the step-by-step I must've hit space or something and skipped down to a different process, got confused, and therein lies the blunder!

Hello Kylu! Thank you very much for the warm welcome, it was most unexpected, but very much appreciated. Be warned however that you've opened yourself up to being my "goto" person for all my wikipedia questions! Kidding of course ;)--Jbobbylopez 07:35, 7 May 2006 (UTC)

You're welcome! Feel free to make me your "goto" person like you said. ;D ~Kylu (u|t) 22:16, 7 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Thanks

Thank you for your warm welcome into the Kindness Campaign. Mr. Turcotte 16:15, 7 May 2006 (UTC)

You're absolutely welcome! ~Kylu (u|t) 22:18, 7 May 2006 (UTC)

It is good to know that there are Wikipedians like you. Mr. Turcotte 20:32, 8 May 2006 (UTC)

*blushes* Wow, thanks! :D ~Kylu (u|t) 23:24, 8 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Re:Userpage

Hey thanks, I like your userpage too (also like your signature)! If you ever wanted some help with the codes (which you claim to need although they don't appear to be too bad) just let me know I'd be glad to help. By the way you're doing great work, keep it up!--Joe Jklin 23:31, 7 May 2006 (UTC)

Thanks! I'm currently considering a new format to make everything all nice and nifty, plus I've got planned userbox additions and... ready for this... some article ideas! Like, actual white-background encyclopedia articles! Really! :D

[edit] Matrix_(IT)

I am sorry for adding comments to votes (something only allowed exceptionally, not for expressing opinion/for discussion). The matrix article is very short!, and whatever it is, it is (IMO) not a "hoax", because it is valid usage of language. The editor(s) should have tried to add data/parse the sentences mechanically (as i did), i have done this for others articles, see End-user computing, which is related to artificial intelligence. I do not really know the details, but it was very abstract language. I have experienced removal of edit templates quite often, i.e. Red_hair, passages were edited overnight, and templates vanished. I am new to Afd, but now i have learned how to list articles, and not try to discuss within the vote list, and not to vote myself. Akidd dublintl•ctr-l 08:06, 8 May 2006 (UTC)

You don't have to apologize to me! I'm just a newbie editor, y'know! As far as the article goes, the hoax-ness of it was never the problem that I had: It's the facts that:
  • It's not a mainstream programming term. I'm sure you've looked over my talk and userpages and have determined that primarily I'm a musician and artist, not a programmer, but I do my own programming and have assisted on many GPL'd (and BSD's for that matter) licensed projects, plus my own "in house" projects I never bother to license. Really, why bother licensing a program that just mass-renames DSC*.JPG's? I do know enough programmers that after doing my own programming for...uh, let's say in excess of ten years, you'd think I'd have heard of it outside of IBMSpeak. :)
  • It's a variant of "Package", which is in MUCH wider use. I could see making it a redirect possibly, in this case, but...
  • The article text itself is a dictionary definition. Wikipedia is not a dictionary. Wiktionary is, so the definition as given should be transferred to Wiktionary so that they may debate its hoax-ness or not.
In my opinion, we need a speedy-delete with a code for "Delete, transfer to Wiktionary" considering how many of these I come across daily. We just happened to bump into eachother over this particular one. :D
Anyway, vote if you'd like, though I think most people who list the article choose to not vote. Since they're listing the article, it's rather obvious what outcome the listing individual wishes. If you mean the AfD/RfD/MfD processes themselves, personally I encourage you to continue voting and being involved in the process. Wikipedia is built on consensus, and without people speaking up and speaking their mind, Wikipedia is nothing.
Ja mata! ~Kylu (u|t) 20:04, 8 May 2006 (UTC)
Yes, i should speak up, but more carefully. I tend to include my politics sometimes, or sarcasm (skeletor). It is probably a hacker term as well, but i can not verify it. There should be a quick option to transfer dicdef-style articles to the dictionary. Some Articles may gather additonal information after years. There are lots of articles which should not (OR, dictionary style). It would be a loss just to delete them. It is more important, to ask if someone probably seeks this piece of information. A Hit counter would also make sense. If an article is requested regularily, then not delete it. Akidd dublintl•ctr-l 08:25, 9 May 2006 (UTC)
There is a quick option to transfer dicdef articles to the dictionary:
Transwiki to Wiktionary as dicdef, then delete per nom. ~~~~
Problem is getting people to use it. :D ~Kylu (u|t) 03:47, 10 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] EdMercer

Thanks for the warm welcome, it was totally unexpected and made me feel right at home as a Wikipedian. About the 'sneaking' of you as a character, the answer is 'why of course I can !' Drop me a note with a high-res version of your avatar so I can pipe it through the art team (hope you don't mind being yet-another-gradstand-cameo). Ed Mercer 12:23, 8 May 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for welcoming me into Wikipedia! Your warm greeting and useful help links are something that every wikipedian needs! Keep up the great work! —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Piquisito (talkcontribs) .

I'm glad you find it useful, though honestly it's just my personal modification to {{welcomeg}}. Of course, I don't want to use something generic, so I put my own (pink) spin on the thing! [edit] Creating an archive page

[edit] Yahoo! TOS

Hi Kylu. Could you add a link to the Yahoo! TOS on the Image:Lilewyn-yahoo-avatar.png image description page? It would be helpful for others verifying its copyright status. Thanks. ~MDD4696 03:54, 9 May 2006 (UTC)

No problem! I've added a few applicable links and am awaiting a response from Yahoo! at the moment regarding the request. Once I get a response from the copyright agent at Yahoo!, I'll update the information on the image further! ~Kylu (u|t) 04:37, 9 May 2006 (UTC)
Thanks :). I appreciate your effort to be as clear as possible with the image; it makes image maintenance so much easier. Hey, I was looking at your user page, and I saw that you have a neat map of your subpages. Did you know you can also automatically generate a list of subpages? (Well, actually, a list of pages in the specified namespace that begin with a certain string). ~MDD4696 16:37, 9 May 2006 (UTC)
Didn't know that tool was there, huh! Nifty! Should make my map maintainance easier, thanks!

...couldn't get to sleep. Removed position:absolute. There's probably a way to make this work in IE, but...I have no clue what that way is, and given that it's broken in IE but works fine in firefox and opera, I'm chalking it up to some funky IE-specific thing. Ahwell, looked nifty too. ~Kylu (u|t) 08:35, 10 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] thanks for the welcome basket

Hey - thanks for the welcome note the other day! I used to study HIV (a retrovirus, hence my alias - good catch), but now I work on HPV (very much not a retrovirus). I've lurked the Wikipedia for a while now, but I was inspired to join when I noticed the human papillomavirus entry could use some help, IMHO. Is it appropriate for me to erase and entirely re-write several whole paragraphs the HPV entry? If so, am I supposed to use the etiquette of posting the old text in the "discussion" window for people to more easily retrieve it? Retroid 20:04, 10 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Transwiki templates

Hiya! I am interested in helping with the transwiki system and noticed your {{transwiki}} and {{transwiki2}} templates. I've not yet started doing any transwiki work and would like to know if you'd like some help testing, specifically from a newbie user standpoint? I've got brand new accounts on meta and wiktionary for the purpose of transwikification and would be happy to help. ~Kylu (u|t) 20:18, 11 May 2006 (UTC)

I haven't done transwikification in a while. It's quite time-consuming to transwiki stuff properly, because you have to copy and paste the page, copy its history to the talk page on the target wiki, format the entry correctly (for Wiktionary anyway), and propose the old entry for deletion. As a result, it's not something I've been doing for a while. If you want to go ahead and transwiki stuff, knock yourself out :) Stifle (talk) 20:20, 11 May 2006 (UTC)
Yeah, I've been looking over the transwiki process and noticed that it's not exactly something people seem to be eager to do. It'd be nice if you could slap {{transwiki}} on an article and it'd be put in a queue. Admin clicks "transwiki" and it automagically appears on the correct destination wiki where a receiving admin clicks "import" and bam, you're done.
Not that I see this happening anytime soon, especially not cross-class transwikification (*pedia <-> *tionary) where article format is completely different (as you said).
I'd like to do something beyond be a resource drain, though, and I haven't seen a lot of people do this sort of work.
Thanks for the reply! ~Kylu (u|t) 20:31, 11 May 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for your welcome message..Please let me know how could I help in the kindness campaign. I am on a wikibreak at the moment.. Sure I will help your project when I return..  «Mÿšíc»  (T) 15:04, 12 May 2006 (UTC)

I take a little spin on the Kindness Campaign, myself. Generally speaking I try to be (painfully) nice to people whenever I can and keep a lookout for people who are good contributors to the community and/or the encyclopedia itself. When I come across those individuals, I sneak over to their talk page and smack a big fat WP:Barnstar on it! There are so many people who tirelessly work on this project, and so few of them get any recognition at all. Maybe my "part" here is primarily to keep people motivated and happy? I try, and I even think it works sometimes. :)
~Kylu (u|t) 02:27, 13 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Thanks

Wow, thanks! Your template looks great, and fairly more professional than the current, boring one. Good work! =) —Coat of Arms (talk) 06:40, 13 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Vandalism

Eh, I didn't vandalize any page with that account. I made a polite, reasoned statement on two talk pages. These statements contained no misinformation, blanking, or other abuse, nor did these statements contain any spam or other policy violations. --Ah, Whatever 08:34, 13 May 2006 (UTC)

Afraid your account is still blocked indefinintely, as is the one you posted to here with. Sorry. :(

[edit] Vandalizing

Dude. I blanked the Vandalizing Page. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 12.227.134.40 (talkcontribs) .

Yes, yes you did. There's an AfD (that I asked to be closed) currently about "vandalize" pages. The blanking user was blocked, because generally it's understood that vandalism pages are for adding comments i.e. "Guestbooks". I'd rather not see anyone else be blocked on account of this. If you have any questions on it, though, please ask me. :) ~Kylu (u|t) 02:55, 14 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Template?

Do you have a template for this? It'd be handy... Snoutwood (talk) 02:28, 14 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Block template

Greetings! Just wanted to let you know, you're using a template for temporary blocks that says "blocked indefinitely" (here's the diff). RadioKirk talk to me 03:36, 14 May 2006 (UTC)

Ack! That one's listed as a 24hr, thanks! :) ~Kylu (u|t) 03:43, 14 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Block notices

Hi, I've noticed that you seem to be giving out block notices and I thought you were not an admin. Can you please explain what's going on? I'm slightly confused. JoshuaZ 03:36, 14 May 2006 (UTC)

Nope, not an admin, I don't know if I'll ever get to the point where I'd request it, actually, just being helpful. I've noticed many admins aren't doing this, and asked one of the admins about notices and was told that the blocking admin should be doing the notices. If they don't, I'm filling the gaps, but only between fixing vandalism (CVU). Hope that helps! ~Kylu (u|t) 03:40, 14 May 2006 (UTC)
Ok, I didn't realize the blocking admins weren't getting around to giving the block notices. Keep up the good work. JoshuaZ 04:00, 14 May 2006 (UTC)
I had just blocked User:Foes and rocs, and was in the process of adding the message, but you got there first. Not a problem for me though. --rogerd 04:14, 14 May 2006 (UTC)
If I can make you have less work to do, it's worth it. I'm curious how many angry emails I've got by now though! ~Kylu (u|t) 04:17, 14 May 2006 (UTC)
If it's not too much to ask, give the blocking admin a few minutes; often, we're cleaning up the mess and/or updating WP:AIV and/or investigating sockpuppets. Thanks for the help! RadioKirk talk to me 04:21, 14 May 2006 (UTC)
No problem. I can just stick it in a text editor and check it in a few, sound okay? :) ~Kylu (u|t) 04:23, 14 May 2006 (UTC)
Works for me. :) RadioKirk talk to me 04:25, 14 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Check user

Kylu, can you say who did the check user on Gomi-no-sensei, and what it showed in terms of vandalism? I've also just requested one for sockpuppetry, which is why I'm interested. I like your pink page, by the way. SlimVirgin (talk) 04:26, 14 May 2006 (UTC)

Block editor User:Gomi-no-sensei blocked by admin User:SlimVirgin Length: indefinite "sockpuppetry; confirmed by check user" Using {{test5i}} for the "Privacy violations" section, in harassing a user (IronDuke). I don't actually know which checkuser [1] did the checkuser, but it shows in the log who did the block.[2] Sorry I'm so slow in responding, but I had to put this message together. I've got a nice timer going on blockmessages now, gives me an opportunity to make them a bit more concise. I notice you added the note below the message, which is what RadioKirk (nice guy btw!) mentioned below, asking me to slow down, which is a Good Thing. Guess I was a bit quick on the draw in trying to notice-place (they were coming in pretty quick for a minute there!) Sorry about the over-rapidity, but if I can help in any way, please ask. :)
Oh, by the way, thanks for the comment on the page! I rather like it, myself. Poor MoP's eyes must be going blank with all the pink schemes I've assaulted them with by now. I like your fractal, too. (I've got a little fractal art in my dA gallery) :)
~Kylu (u|t) 04:44, 14 May 2006 (UTC)
I'm not sure I follow. Are you saying you posted that he'd been blocked because you saw I'd blocked him? It's best not to do that, Kylu, because the blocking admin will usually want to leave a post explaining. Gomi was not blocked for vandalism, for example. Cheers, SlimVirgin (talk) 09:00, 14 May 2006 (UTC)
Ayep. See a few of the above messages, plus admins on IRC who've told me that this saves them time. I figured with the support for it, it was a needed bit of assistance, but if you dissaprove then I'll discontinue it. I'm on wikibreak and only responding to messages for a little bit, not "taking part" at the moment, so replies will be delayed, sorry. As far as the choice of template, I noticed the "test" tags are vandalism but also refer to "Privacy violations" which I'd thought fit also, but that doesn't much matter atm. :) Anywho, have fun and good luck! ~Kylu (u|t) 16:39, 14 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] A Word on Welcoming

Hello -- You left a welcome message on my recently created account the other day, which I removed because I don't really like template welcome messages. Even if they are highly personalised in form, they're still rather impersonal in content. But don't be dismayed - you are always welcome to leave a comment if you have something more specific to say, for example in reference to something on my userpage. You seem to enjoy creativity, especially music, so here's a link to some of mine. Zerrakhi 07:49, 14 May 2006 (UTC)

Gotcha. The template is mostly used to give handy links for first-timers and in the majority of cases they seem to appreciate it. Honestly, you're the first person to say they disliked it. :(
Anyway, I'm still glad you decided to join us in editing. Take care, hey? ~Kylu (u|t) 16:50, 14 May 2006 (UTC)
Well, it's not that there's any harm done, more that I wanted to give you the courtesy of telling you why I removed it. I'm learning about wikipedia editing bit by bit, for example today I used a citation template for the first time. Zerrakhi 18:10, 14 May 2006 (UTC)
I dunno, I think this has been my "down week" on wikipedia. I promise I try to be as cheerful as I can, but it's kinda taken the cake so far. Akidd (see below) had a rather unusual view of what a "Software Matrix" was and kept trying to argue against the article's deletion, saying it was censorship ref ref2, managed to get greylisted by reverting to the wrong version twice (irc CVU) and then manage to upset an admin while trying to be helpful (see Check user, right above this).
Not to sound like a griper, but I think after this I'm going to stick to my little wikibreak (see the very top of this page) and not edit, vandal-fight, or anything for a little while. I may stop checking messages entirely for a bit. :P
Okay, gripe's over, back to being happy on my mini-vacation for a while. :) ~Kylu (u|t) 23:06, 14 May 2006 (UTC)
I just wanted to say that I like your welcome template. I remember when I was first welcomed in March, 2005 with the standard {{welcome}}, and it didn't bother me at all, but yours is more personal. I think you are doing the right thing with your welcomes. --rogerd 16:34, 15 May 2006 (UTC)
Thanks for the note, Rogerd! I rather like it also, and while I think I'm going to change the way I approach a few things on here now that I'm back from wikibreak, I'm going to renew my interest in welcoming and helping new wikipedians. :) Can't let little things get us down or stop us from helping those who want to help our project, you know! ~Kylu (u|t) 06:20, 19 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] matrix (IT)

right. i read somehere on the net, the sum of all internet terminals, mainframes etc. is called "the matirx" (in hacker terms). it should be on the disambiguation page- not into an article on its own. together with the information about "software matrix"- one line will do. if verification possible. there is not really a need to make articles out of such information. by the way i have relocated to Yy-bo. Akidd dublin (abandoned 5/2006) 11:31, 14 May 2006 (UTC)

That term is heavily used in The Matrix series, a set of movies. The ad campaign for the series was, "What is the Matrix?" and raised a lot of speculation.
I'm not maintaining the "Matrix" articles and have no intention of doing so, you're welcome to it, though I'd heavily suggest (after having read, many times, your talk page) that you give consideration to the opinions of other editors, especially on matters of grammar and language usage. I don't mean any offense by that, it's just that you have a little misplaced confidence in your English skills, perhaps. Don't get offended when they try to help you out, please. :)
~Kylu (u|t) 17:02, 14 May 2006 (UTC)
I know you haven't replied, but if you read this, Yy-bo, I hope you do understand that I was trying to help with what, on rereading, might've been a bit harsh critique of your English usage. Take care of yourself, okay? ~Kylu (u|t) 06:20, 19 May 2006 (UTC)

They don't mind if you add gibberish, which you can't normally do on a guestbook, just don't erase the gibberish or sigs that others add, please. :)

Thanks
Kylu/Archive 2, thank you you so much for validating my RfA! I am grateful for all the supportive comments, and have taken both the positive and constructive on board. If I can ever make any improvements or help out in any way, please let me know, ditto if you see me stumble! Thanks again for your much appreciated support. Deizio talk 18:07, 17 May 2006 (UTC)
I'm always happy when someone I know has something good happen to them. See you on chat later, Deiz! ~Kylu (u|t) 06:20, 19 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Blast it!

A certain "obnoxious vandal" decided to delete the userbox you were posting about on my talk page, so your usrpage is now redlinking if you look hard enough. 68.39.174.238 01:25, 18 May 2006 (UTC)

Edited: See {{User talk:68.39.174.238/accountbeggars}} now. User:206.246.160.221 03:42, 19 May 2006 (UTC) (anons gotta stick together)

[edit] Thanks from El cubano

Thanks for helping me get my first image uploaded. El Cubano 03:10, 18 May 2006 (UTC)

Glad to help! Sorry I couldn't find the answer for you on the other question though, but I think if you ask in #wikimedia they may have a way of bypassing the alt-commands. Sorry! If anyone else reading this knows how to (temporarily) disable alt-key commands in Wikipedia temporarily, please help El Cubano out, okay? Thanks vera much! ~Kylu (u|t) 06:20, 19 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Oh my aching finger

Good spot, "Deizbot" just spent a fun 20 minutes on awb fixing the links... no prizes for guessing who I borrowed the RfA thanks box from either! One of your favourite users? Talk about pressure... ;) Nice one, Deizio talk 11:48, 18 May 2006 (UTC)

Hehe, sorry to make you go through all that work, Deiz! Hope nobody else noticed that little glitch. :D
Now to get more of my friends RfA'd, I can have my vera own cabal! *cackle!* ... ya right! ~Kylu (u|t) 06:20, 19 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Wikibreak and Archiving

Hey all! Wikibreak's over (though I'm just putting up some replies at the moment) and I've noticed that my talk page is getting to be a teensy bit on the gargantuan side here.

Here's the plan:

  1. Append these talk comments onto Archive 2 in a few days.
  2.  ???
  3. Profit!

Seriously though, I think I'm going to change a few things:

  1. More research with RfA's. I've done what I think, so far, has been a pretty good job of doing research on candidates before establishing (and voicing) my opinion on them. Problem is that I haven't voted at all on candidates that I'm hesitant about or think might not benefit the project. It's about time to do so, I think.
Main thing to remember here: Admin "is no big deal" or not, but while be-mopped, they have great responsibility and great potential for really screwing up. Even if it means I have to ask a friend, "You're not ready yet, I don't think. Maybe you should wait a while and RfA again."
  1. Pick *-for-deletion votes more carefully. If there are fifty Delete votes for an article, and I look at it and also decide it's worthless, then it's basically a waste of time chiming in "per nomination" there. It's going to get deleted. My vote isn't doing anything.
Improvement: Start looking at deletions which have a lot of commentary, which need some sort of deciding factor or are close. Find deletions that my vote will matter in, not just a "me too"-ism. Develop some guidelines for what constitutes "deletion-worthy" WP:HEY
  1. De-stress. Beleive it or not, between two jobs and this and my irc network and family life and various other factors, I get stressed too from time to time. That's part of the reason I took my "vacation". The other part is that quite frankly I was spending enough time on here that it was interfering with my practice (aka work) which is a darn good way of losing your chair (position in an orchestra). Bach didn't lay down the quill and decide to take up another career because he stayed up all night playing online. :)
Key: Leave once in a while. Take past stressors and put them out of mind. It's a very important project, but there are thousands of editors that can pick up the slack. WP:CHILL
  1. Articles. I really don't know what happened. I made a couple stubs, switch gears and play CVU and welcoming and other talk-page games, and the articles themselves just sort of get forgotten. I'm not saying that users and vandalism fighting are unimportant!
Solution: I'm just saying that if I'm going to consider myself an Encyclopedia Editor (notice the caps?) and not just a "community user" (notice lack of caps?) then I actually need to contribute to Wikipedia's article namespace, make additions and positive changes, and weigh my deletions a bit more carefully. I imagine my quotas on the userpage will change due to this.
  1. RfA/Editor Review I'm not sure what it is that I did on irc while on break, but I've had three different people look over the userpage (not contributions apparently, though?) and ask when I was planning on going for admin. Really guys, I don't think I'll ever be able to... I've got a lot on my plate as it is without adding on wikipolitics. Hmm, that'd be an interesting wiki, wouldn't it?
However: Editor Review seems interesting. I think, once I've actually, y'know contributed to some articles and done some positive changes, that I'll ask for a review of my performance. If it's overwhelmingly negative, then maybe I should find something better to do than ruin something this important. If it's overwhelmingly positive, then I might increase my role. Either way, I hope there will be some constructive feedback that I can use to better my contributions.

Please feel free to comment on this if you'd like, however please note that I plan on archiving this page in the next few days. The page is getting a little overburdened. I'm a bit odd in that I keep my archive pages on watch. In English, this means that you could potentially continue a conversation there, though I imagine it'd work just as well if we continued it here.

Ky, you've obviously come back from break raring to go. I'm scared your pages could get even pinker as a result ;) I'm also totally chuffed that you've got WP:CHILL and WP:HEY as refs here, but (whispering in ear) :CHILL is not really about counting to ten, it's about new creations / companies / web sites / bands etc. just waiting that little bit longer before being entered into the Big List of Totally Encyclopedic Stuff. Others have made the same slip, in hindsight I should have realized this would happen but claimed the title because it rules. Maybe I'll pen him a twin sister called WP:CHILLOUT? Deizio talk 01:06, 20 May 2006 (UTC)
(had to add an indent for ya, sorry Deiz ~kylu)
WP:CHILL works both ways, imho. The title says it all: "Wikipedia:The World Will Not End Tomorrow." I work a retail job (mostly for the benefits and discount) as well as the music thing, and the store manager there told me, "There's absolutely nothing we have that people can't do without, and nothing, including the cash drawer, is worth risking your life" ... similar thing on wikipedia that WP:CHILL hints at but doesn't quite say. There's no article, bit of vandalism, user conflict, or any other problem that requires my (or anyone else's) immediate attention on this side of the edit curtain. Perhaps the developers have some critical things that they have to deal with, but if you're not feeling completely and totally comfortable and calm and collected, there's no reason why you can't go take a stroll through the park, sit back and relax, and otherwise compose yourself before replying or editing.
Here's a hint (you might've noticed from irc): I'm actually a pretty snappsih person, not nearly as nice there as I am on here, I think. The big difference is that on chat and in person, generally it's expected that you give an immediate reply to any stimulus, whereas in emails and on wikipedia you do not. I've got a small set of rules (and a bit of advice) that I review quickly before hitting that "Save Page" button.
  1. Are you cool? Calm? Don't write while upset.
  2. Clear your mind, forget what you just wrote, and look at it again as if someone just told that to you.
Is this something you might take offense to? Is there another way of wording it?
  1. Smile while you write. While black and white text on a screen does a poor job of conveying emotion, your choice of words can be affected by these emotions, and they will in turn affect your reader. They can tell.
  2. Are you being honest in your facts and opinions? Are you being sincere in your writing?
  3. The best way to become someone's friend is to treat them...like they were a friend.
  4. (From Essjay's page) Everytime you click "save this page" be completely convinced that what you are saving will make Wikipedia a better, more friendly, and more sucessful project, and if what you've typed won't do that, don't click save.
The largest source of contention that I've noticed on userpages is the fact that people continue to edit after they have become emotionally aroused. Angry, depressed, annoyed, whatever, they continue to type and spill easily-regretted feelings into our digital home. If possible, I'd like to avoid contributing to that negativity. Be calm and chill when editing, then. :)
btw, please write that CHILLOUT. I'd like to help. :)

[edit] WRT userboxes for the various people...

...I'd note them at the top of their respective vote-sections, rather then @ the top of the page itself. 68.39.174.238 07:04, 19 May 2006 (UTC)

Ah, good point. :) ~Kylu (u|t) 07:06, 19 May 2006 (UTC)
HeHe... I went and added your sig to the notes so people don't think I'm talking in the 3rd person. And I'm still not sure why Titox thought I worked for the Federal Reserve... 68.39.174.238 00:41, 20 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] BOPP'D!

Wait, wait, mop? Oh no, I stay away from mops! (well, 'cept you, you're a MoP with no mop) Look just below us, man, someone already thinking I've got a mop! At least let me hit a few months on here, hey? :D
Ahwell. Maybe MoP should go for the mop again soon, hm?
Don't worry, your imōto is here to support you! ~Kylu (u|t) 05:28, 20 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Can you delete Adam Malkovich??

I'm not an admin, so I can't delete pages, you would have to do that for me. I'm the one who performed the merge of Adam Malkovich with Metroid Fusion. - Danmeister 2:06 20 May 2006 (UTC)

The page Adam Malkovich has been turned into a redirect to Metroid Fusion to preserve page history by admin Kusma for your convenience. See this redirect raw for specifics. Thank you, please drive through! :D ~Kylu (u|t) 04:45, 20 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] My RFA

Image:One-hundred-WikiThanks.gif Thank you, Kylu, for voting in my RFA. It closed with a final result of 75/1/0. Now that I am an administrator here, I will continue to improve this encyclopedia, using my new tools to revert vandalism, block persistent vandals, protect pages that have been vandalized intensively, and close AFD discussions. Any questions? Please contact me by adding a new section on my talk page. Again, thanks to all of you who participated!!! -- King of 23:10, 20 May 2006 (UTC)
I really helping good editors get to admin, though I spend enough time on RfA that I should be 'd for it. ~Kylu (u|t) 00:02, 21 May 2006 (UTC)
