Contents

[edit] Introduction

The premise of these films largely revolves around a formulaic format. The only currently released films that have deviated from this are the Hero review and the "Cake" special.

After recently seeing the film they set out to review, Kyle and Evan happen upon an odd circumstance that leads them on an adventure. While they are on the adventure, they express their opinions on the movie to be reviewed in a critical manner. At the end of this segment, they rate the movie on a scale of 0-5, using objects (sometimes people) to physically represent their scores. They then end the review with a final summary.

After the review is complete, oftentimes Kyle and Evan's friend Tony Nelson will review the movie's trailers in "Tony Reviews the Previews". As of the fourth episode, this segment has been phased out, allowing for Tony to be a regular cast member.

Other cast members have included: Jackson "JaX" Walker, Patrick "Patch" Paladino, Michael Wong, Nancy Veiga, an unnamed Safeway employee, Ryann Nordahl, Tomoc Field, and Chris Sackman.

In the past, the videos were hosted at cacrew.com and Kyle's Locker (now known as /kyle/). Due to the amount of space and bandwidth needed to host the videos, they were offline for some time, but have recently been resurrected thanks to hosting provided by Madgoat Technologies.

[edit] Episodes

There are currently four episodes of Kyle and Evan Do The Movies, and a special episode called In The Kitchen With Kyle and Evan. A fifth episode is currently in production, with two more specials, Kyle and Evan Get Fired and Kyle and Evan's Rejected Ideas (tentative title) in early phases.

[edit] #1 - Hero

The "pilot" episode of Kyle and Evan Do The Movies featured a review of the wuxia film Hero, starring Jet Li. Hero's previews were for the movies The Grudge, Alexander, and Finding Neverland.

The episode was the very first produced, with very amateurish production. The camera work is sloppy and poorly done. At times, the camera operator even interacts with the actors, laughing at jokes or talking. This episode is without a plot, it features the reviewers simply sitting on a couch and reviewing the movie.

  • Review Scale: Shoes (A shoe is one, a sock is one half, and a foot is one Quarter)
  • Evan's rating: Three and a Half Shoes
  • Kyle's rating: Four Shoes
  • Tony rating for the previews for Hero: One Quarter of a Shoe (Which would be his foot)

[edit] #2 - The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie

The second episode features the wildly popular The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie. The previews this time were Fat Albert, Bewitched, Madagascar, and Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events. This is also the first episode with a plot in the series. The storyline features Kyle and Evan being chased by Tony for reasons unknown. The video begins with the two fleeing in Evan's car, and stopping over at Tony's father's house. The two eventually escape to the beach to evade their pursuer, and then review the movie.

This episode shows much improvement over the first; however, it is not without its problems. There are major sound issues throughout the episode, including an unintentional echo effect created when capturing the audio, and Kyle and Evan's voices being overpowered by the wind at Bodega Bay.

  • Review Scale: Bikini Bottoms
  • Evan's rating: Three Bikini Bottoms
  • Kyle's rating: Three and a Half Bikini Bottoms
  • Tony's rating for the previews for The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie: Two and a Half out of Five

[edit] #3 - Ocean's Twelve

The third episode features Ocean's Twelve. The previews were Mr. and Mrs. Smith (which the team was too late to actually catch), Batman Begins, Be Cool, and Constantine.

For an attempt at continuity, Evan's car was stolen while he and Kyle were at the beach. The two attempt to hitchike their way home. They eventually find a park, and while pausing for a brief time there, review the movie. They later happen upon a shopping cart, and later crash it while playing around. They then sit down at a bench to recover, and finishing reviewing the movie. They start walking home again, and finally find Evan's car, but steal a much nicer one after its driver runs off, the car left running.

The plot is somewhat based of an actual incident. Evan's Volvo had been broken into while he and his friends were in the theaters seeing Ocean's Twelve, though nothing had been stolen.

This is the first episode without any large errors (Though Kyle laughs slightly during Tony's segment at some points.)

  • Review Scale: Friends
  • Evan's rating: Two Friends (Patrick "Patch" Paladino and Michael Wong)
  • Kyle's rating: Two and a Half Friends (Jackson "JaX" Walker, Michael Wong, and Tony Nelson-- who curls up to signify that he is a "half")
  • Tony's rating for Ocean's Twelve's previews: One out of Five

[edit] #4 - The Life Aquatic

The underrated movie The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou was featured in this edition. The crew got to the movie during the last few seconds of the previews, so "Tony Reviews The Previews" is left out, though Tony still gets his own scene at the end.

Kyle and Evan have been transported back to the 1970s (or so they think), and are dressed accordingly. They start off with opening statements about the movie and a few corny jokes, all while walking down the street in downtown Santa Rosa. They then stop off to the drop-off point where they are to receive a package to bring to Tony. In the meantime, they review the movie. After the duo secures the bag, they head off to Tony's pad to drop it off. While waiting for Tony to arrive, they finish reviewing and rate the movie. Upon Tony's arrival in the room, greetings are exchanged before Kyle and Evan give Tony the bag. Upon inspection, the bag is empty. In anger, Tony pulls out a gun and points it at our heroes. After begging for forgiveness, they have no choice but to jump out the window, avoiding Tony's gunshots. They land on the street, and get up to run off.

Some ambient noises and the music sometimes overpower Kyle and Evan's speech, though they are still audible. This episode also features the most music of any episode, though the majority is not their own.

  • Review Scale: Sunglasses
  • Evan's rating: Four Sunglasses
  • Kyle's rating: Four and a Half Sunglasses

[edit] Specials

[edit] In The Kitchen With Kyle and Evan - Cake

In this extra episode, Kyle and Evan attempt to bake a cake for Tony's birthday party.

After devouring a cake in three minutes A phone call reveals Jackson left the cake at Kyle's house for the two to take to the party. Kyle and Evan realize they must bake a new cake and bring it to the party. However, they mistake the party for a celebration of Tony's 17th Bris, while it is actually his 17th Birthday. The two fail horribly at baking their own cake, and end up having to order a cake at Safeway, saving his party in the end.

Also appearing is a commercial featuring Tony Nelson for "Tony's Used Stuff Emporium".

From a technical standpoint, this is possibly the best Kyle and Evan to be released. It contains the least amount of errors.

[edit] Upcoming Projects

[edit] #5 - The Star Wars Saga

In what will easily be their biggest review and adventure ever, Kyle and Evan, as Jedi, will traverse the galaxy, attempting to review all six Star Wars movies, while simultaneously parodying them. Besides Kyle and Evan as Jedi, supporting cast includes Spencer Lee in a role equivalent to the character Obi-Wan Kenobi, Tony Nelson as a Yoda-like wise man, Noreen Pitts as The Princess, Brian Place as a Boba Fett-esque Bounty Hunter, Patrick Paladino as the vile gangster Mukaka Potreev (an obvious Jabba the Hutt rip-off), and various others in minor roles. It has been in the works since summer 2005.

[edit] Kyle and Evan Get Fired

Jackson "JaX" Walker, the head of CACrew Films Media, fires Kyle and Evan for going way over-budget with #5 (Hextupling the original ten dollar budget to $60) and replaces them with Neil Jimenez and Tony Nelson, respectively. Not much else is currently known. Work on the script began in April 2005, and the special was slated to be produced and released shortly after work on In The Kitchen with Kyle and Evan was finished, but was put on hold while the Star Wars review took priority.

[edit] Kyle and Evan's Rejected Ideas (tentative title)

Kyle and Evan have expressed interest in making an episode comprised of short clips and gags that, though worthy of mention, never made it into any actual episode, similar in form to the TV variety show Robot Chicken.

[edit] Extras

[edit] The Music Videos

Two music videos have been created using leftover footage from #2 (SpongeBob) and #3 (Ocean's Twelve) respectively. The music used for the first video features the song "Blueside" by Rooney, and the second features "Vamos Nenas" by Cordero. CACrew Films Media does not claim any copyright on the music used in these features.

[edit] Trivia

[edit] Random Facts

  • All the filming is done on location mostly in Santa Rosa, California or Bodega Bay, California.
  • The concept for Kyle and Evan Do The Movies was conceived by Kyle and Evan during a camping trip in the summer of 2004 (which Evan's girlfriend Noreen Pitts planned). Tony's inclusion was last-minute, and only upon his request that he get a part in it.
  • The voice clip of SpongeBob SquarePants saying "cacrew!" at the beginning of #2 is real. It comes from a shout-out to cacrew.com recorded by Tom Kenny, voice of SpongeBob SquarePants and other characters on the television show.
  • Though Tony had remarked he would see A Series of Unfortunate Events, he actually never did.
  • Tony's role in #4 as a pimp stems from a quote Tony randomly remarked to Evan, said in a very dry and unassuming tone, "You know Evan, pimping is not easy, but it is, in fact, necessary."
  • The car Jackson leaves for Kyle and Evan to steal in #3 is actually Michael Wong's.
  • Evan still has the cart from #3 in his possession.
  • Kyle and Evan #5, The Star Wars Saga, has been delayed because Kyle and Evan are now in college in different areas of California.
  • While he was in Europe, Evan made a short silent film entitled The Quarter Pounder. It features his attempts to order a Quarter Pounder with Cheese in France. The cashier is confused by his order. After thinking back to the Quentin Tarantino film Pulp Fiction, he remembers that in France, a Quarter Pounder with Cheese is called a Royale with Cheese. He then successfully orders his food. Had Evan not spent six weeks in Europe, #5 likely would have been completed by fall 2005.
  • The first four Kyle and Evans, as well as the music videos, were released in RealMedia format. For "Cake", the format switched to Windows Media format. This will remain for future episodes.
  • The Kyle and Evan theme song was recorded on location immediately after filming the first Kyle and Evan. It is simply Kyle and Evan humming a tune they improvised.
  • Much of the dialogue in the series is improvised, especially in episodes 1-3 and "Cake".
  • The Hero Review is the only instance in which Tony uses the review scale during his segment.
  • The team has secretly grown to hate doing the movie review segments, and is hoping to eventually phase them out completely.

[edit] Recurring Themes

  • An episode of Kyle and Evan usually begins in this manner:

Kyle: "Oh hey!"
Evan: "Hi!"
Kyle: "Didn't see you there!"

  • During "Tony Reviews the Previews", a cat (real or otherwise) appears somewhere during Tony's review.

The same holds true when Tony appears as a character in episodes where "Tony Reviews the Previews" is dropped.

  • Tony's segment usually ends with something along the lines of "I hope you enjoyed yourselves... because I sure didn't."
  • Kyle and Evan always end an episode with an "Adios!" from Kyle and a "Later!" from Evan. The only exception is in the special episode In The Kitchen With Kyle and Evan.
  • An episode's credits always end with the pseudo-disclaimer, "(please don't sue us)"
  • The 70s had been mentioned in the Ocean's Twelve review, before actually being the theme of the day for The Life Aquatic's review.
  • Kyle and Evan's absurd banter at the beginning of the Hero Review carries over into In The Kitchen With Kyle and Evan. While in the first instance the topic is dung-fueled cars, in the latter episode Evan recalls a time when he considered becoming Amish "a while back".
  • Tony as an antagonizer to Kyle and Evan. In #2, he chases the two down; in #3, Evan remarks he needs "Tony Repellant Spray"; in #4, he fires a gun at the two in anger; and in "Cake", he viciously insults their lack of knowledge on the difference between a bris and a birthday.
