[edit] History

Evergreen Media first started their broadcasts on frequency 94.9 FM after KLTY-FM moved theirs to 94.1 in 1986. The station was initially licensed as KHYI Y 95, broadcasting the Top 40 format for 5 years. In the midst of broadcasting, the station was rebranded Power 95 in 1991. That same year, the station initially requested callsign KXRK, and originally was to be an Album-Oriented "Pirate Radio" Rock station, but Scott Ginsburg of Evergreen Media changed his mind in favor of Oldies, thus KODZ Oldies 94.9 has emerged. Less than a year later, the branding was changed to KSNN Sunny 95, playing classic country music. Former country station KYNG (now KLLI) leased KSNN with the option to purchase, creating the first FM duopoly in DFW. The "Sunny" branding was resurrected on KEGL from 2004 to 2005 as an oldies/AC station. In 1996, the station decided to switch to an "All News" format as KEWS All News 94.9, much like WBAP-AM and KRLD-AM. The newscasts were live, but initially carried CNN News after 8PM; later extended live news until midnight, then to continuously live on April 1, 1996. On October 27, 1996, the local news format was suspended as sister station KYNG was broadcasted over 94.9 for several weeks after their tower fell; although KEWS staffers were retained briefly for a return after KYNG's tower was repaired, the station couldn't return to its glory and the owners pulled the plug on the News format by December 1996, and stunting began with simulcasts of CNN Headline News and later a syndicated Talk format.

In 1997, Salem Communications bought the station and made it into a Christian Talk format as KWRD The Word 94.9. KWRD moved to rimshot 100.7 on December 22, 2000 by trading places with KLTY.
