KWEX-TV is the local Univisión owned and operated station in San Antonio, Texas. The station is the first commercially-based Spanish language television station in the United States.

[edit] History

KWEX began as KCOR-TV in 1955, named after its radio sister station, which itself was named for Raul CORtez, the owner. It was the first (and for years only) UHF station in South Texas. The station engineering staff oversaw the conversion of 17,000 VHF only sets to add UHF adapters. In addition, the station produced many programs (soaps, news, quiz shows), in addition to airing programming from film brought up from Mexico. The station later became KUAL-TV.

By 1961, the TV station had absorbed all of the resources that Mr. Cortez could afford, and he sold the stations off, with KUAL being sold to the Spanish International Network (Univision's predecessor). By then, KUAL had became KWEX-TV, which it remains today.
