[edit] "Vogue pronunciation"?
The name was romanized according to the vogue pronunciation among progressive students in the late 19th century.
I would have thought it is romanised that way only because it was always written that way at the time in kana (くわんせい), just like why Iwo Jima is spelt that way, because it used to be written as いわうじま in kana. If it was pronounced kwansei then surely it wasn't just some "progressive students" who did, kansei being a newer pronunciation than kwansei... -- 129.78.64.106 12:25, 20 September 2006 (UTC)
