KVLY channel 11 (44 digital/HD) is the NBC television affiliate based in Fargo, North Dakota, with a studio in Grand Forks, North Dakota also, that serves much of eastern North Dakota and northwestern Minnesota. The station is most notable for using the tallest above-ground structure in the world for broadcasting its signal. The KVLY-TV mast rises 2,063 feet (628.8 m) high, and set the standard for current height limitations in the United States. KXJB channel 4 operates the second-tallest tower in the world. KXJB and KVLY are housed in the same building. KVLY is owned by NBC North Dakota, a division of Hoak Media Corporation of Dallas, Texas.

[edit] History

The station's call sign was changed from KTHI (for "The HIgh tower") to KVLY in 1995. KNOX-TV 10 was a separately-owned ABC affiliate in Grand Forks. KVLY bought KNOX in 1953 and put it off the air so KTHI (then known as KXGO) could be the Red River Valley's only ABC station. The station had served as the longtime ABC affiliate in Fargo until May, 1983 when it went to the markets longtime NBC affiliates WDAY 6 in Fargo and WDAZ 8 in Grand Forks, thus moving NBC affiliation from WDAY 6 and WDAZ 8 to KVLY 11, and moving ABC affiliation from KVLY 11 to WDAY 6 and WDAZ 8. The current call sign represents the station's slogan, "The Valley's Choice for Local News," as it serves the communities along the Red River of the North and its tributaries.

In September 2005, KVLY became the first major network affiliate in Fargo to broadcast in high-definition. In May, 2006, KVLY 11 made their logo bolder in lieu of having the Hi-Def Newscast.

KVLY is currently the second most watched television station in the Fargo/Moorhead and Grand Forks markets in the Red River Valley.

Until November 2006, KVLY was owned and operated by North Dakota Television, LLC, which was a holding company of Wicks Television (part of The Wicks Group of Companies of New York City). Hoak bought KVLY and its LMA with KXJB-TV, as well as KFYR-TV of Bismarck and its satellite stations and KSFY of Sioux Falls, SD and its satellite stations. The sale was approved by the FCC on November 17, 2006.
