Food City is a U.S. supermarket chain with stores located in Kentucky, Virginia, and Tennessee. It offers the house labels "Food Club," "Top Crest" and "Valu Time,".
It is owned by K-Va-T Food Stores, a privately held family corporation headquartered in Abingdon, Virginia. K-Va-T Food Stores also owns Mid-Mountain Foods, a distribution center K-Va-T helped form in 1974 and acquired full control of in 1998, as well as Misty Mountain Spring Water, LLC, a producer of bottled water.
Although the nameplate dates back to 1918, the company traces its history to 1955, when the first store opened in Grundy, Virginia by founder Jack Smith. In 1989, K-Va-T purchased the Knoxville, TN based White Stores chain, more than doubling the size of the company. Since then, it has expanded steadily, acquiring many locations from competitors such as Piggly Wiggly, Winn Dixie and Bi-Lo as well as constructing new stores. K-Va-T celebrated its 50th anniversary November 17, 2005.
Food City sponsors two NASCAR events at Bristol Motor Speedway, the Spring Nextel Cup race and the Fall Busch Series race.
On Friday, February 17, 2006, Food City announced the purchase of eight Bi-Lo locations in Knoxville, TN, Maryville, TN, and Oak Ridge, TN bringing Food City's market share to approximately 30% in the Knoxville area market.
Food City in Arizona is not owned by K-Va-T Food Stores; it is owned by Bashas'. Bashas' operates under the following banners: Bashas', Bashas' Farmers Market, Bashas' Dine Markets, Food City, Bashas' Mercado, and AJ'S Fine Foods.
