A kutte is a type of vest worn by punks and metalheads. The word kutte is a loanword from the German Kutte.

[edit] Use

Kutten have found popularity in the punk subculture, especially in the street punk and crust punk scenes. Metalheads sport kutten in the NWOBHM and thrash metal scenes, as well as many other styles of classic metal, rather than the heavy metal scene as a whole.

[edit] Fabrication

Members of these subcultures follow the D.I.Y. ethic and make their own kutten. They remove the sleeves of denim or leather jackets, sew on patches, and pin on buttons. Leather kutten have patches less often. Painted messages and designs adorn some kutten, more often leather than denim. On denim kutten, magic marker has wider use than paint. Kutten makers attach many other objects, such as safety pins, chains, studs, and spikes. The denim kutten of many thrash metal fans will often have an iron cross patch on the back.
