Kurt Jooss

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Kurt Jooss (1901-1979) was a German dancer and choreographer. A student of Rudolf Laban, he is most famous for his 1932 ballet The Green Table.

He left Germany as Adolf Hitler rose to power and moved to England. Later, Joss toured Europe and the United States, eventually returning to Germany after World War II.

He was a leading expressionist dancer in Europe who rejected the traditional dance forms of ballet in order to create dance works that were socially conscious. Choreographic stylistic features include the use of apparent natural movement, large-group unison work and individual characters. He deals with the common man's social and political life.
