This episode examines the sociocultural context of love and the concept of xenophobia. We are introduced to Kurt Dempsey and his intended fiancée Leigh Moriata. However, Leigh's mother will not permit her daughter to marry any man who isn't Japanese. Kurt, deeply in love with Leigh, protests to the doctors to change the angle of his eyes to make them more "Asian". Julia, in the McNamara house, takes a pregnancy test and finds out that she is, in fact, pregnant. This is not good news.
After the titles, a discussion between Christian and two friends on foreign sex partners ensues. When asked by one if Christian gets tired of the "Who-Am-I-Gonna-Lay-Tonight" scene, he responses, "Yes. Absolutely exhausted." The next patient we are introduced to is Ellie Collins, a woman who was in a car accident and who broke her nose. After some initial stalling by Grace, Christian tells her they will do the surgery.
When coming home from work that night, Julia tells Sean she is pregnant, much to his surprise. Before the Dempsey surgery, Liz questions the doctor's integrity, and Sean tries to get Christian to talk him out of telling Julia to get an abortion. After the surgery, Grace goes to consult Christian and sees him getting it on with the gardener in his office.
Sean tells Julia that he thinks they should have the baby, and that he'll stay home. Christian is confronted by Shelly Edwards, a former patient, who promises him sexual favours involving both her and her 17 year old daughter in exchange for some surgery. Disgusted, Christian recognizes that he has a problem and goes to a Sexaholics Anonymous meeting.
At SA, he meets Gina, a woman eight months celibate. But for Christian, that means nothing. He takes her home, has sex with her, and tells her the truth about life. Sex is life...everything else means nothing in the long haul. Sean tells him later that he's taking time off to stay home with the baby. And, during the Ellie Collins surgery, Christian discovers something very interesting....
Julia is having trouble. She has an incompetent cervix, and the only solution is 6 months bed rest. When she is at home, Matt asks her why she's "doing this again. Having a baby you don't want." Obviously, referencing him. If she hadn't gotten pregnant with Matt, she would likely already be a doctor.
So, in post-op, Grace and Christian confront Ellie, who admits that she had her husband break her nose so they would do a surgery no questions asked. Julia goes to school to take her midterm exam, and miscarries the baby. Later that night, Christian sees Grace at a bar, apologizes for yelling at her about Ellie Collins, and asks her why she's there. When she responds she's meeting a date, Christian asks her if she ever gets tired of looking for "the one." Her response:
"Absolutely exhausted."
Next scene, the two are in bed together, and after Christian finishes, Grace leaves. No words, nothing. Christian is shocked. Later that night, Sean confronts Julia about the miscarraige, and accuses her of deliberately miscarrying. Shocked and appalled by this, Julia fights back. Sean gets a call from Leigh Moriata. Her mother didn't believe Kurt was Japanese, but they will marry anyway, because her mother could see that any man willing to change his face for her must love her very much. Sean's response: "I'm very happy for you."
