[edit] History

Kurnool as a village has existed for 2000 years. The first name of kurnool was "Kandenaolu", literally "lubricating village". Many bullock carts which came from far-off places to dig sand in the rivers that ran on both sides of the village stopped to lubricate their wheels. This Kandenavolu became Kurnool when the British took over the town. It is the only inhabited place between two rivers. Kurnool was a major fort during the reign of the Vijayanagar emperors. There is still a grand watch tower called Konda Reddy Buruju to testify the glory it enjoyed during the reign of Vijayanagar emperors, but no one is sure about how the watch tower got its name. (According to ancient people thoughts, This Fort was built by the king "Konda Reddy".Thats why this fort is populared as Konda Reddy Buruju)The British contributed much to present-day Kurnool with good schools, churches, etc.
