Kumta

Kumta (also Coompta), is a sea-coast town in the Uttara Kannada District of Karnataka, India. Kumta is about 40 miles (60 km) south of the city of Karwar.
During the British Raj, it was a part of the North Kanara district of Bombay Presidency. It had an open roadstead, with a considerable trade. Carving in sandalwood was a speciality. The commercial importance of Kumta had declined after the opening of the Southern Mahratta railway system.
There are many tourist places nearby Kumta. Gokarna, famous for the its beach, is just 20 km. Jog Falls, tallest waterfall of India, is 70 km. Other spots worth mentioning are: Murdeshwara (60 km), Yana (20 km).
Kumta is known for its betelnut, coconut and banana cultivation. Kumta has also been a pionner learning center in the Uttar Kannada District with presence of Dr A.V Baliga College and Gibb High School.
