The town of Kumbla is situated close to the border of the southern Indian states of Karnataka and Kerala. In the Kannada language of southern India it is more popularly known as Kumbale.

Although it once belonged to Karnataka, it was later merged with the neighbouring Kerala. The name Kumbla/Kumbale was derived from Kanipura (or the land of Kanwa Maharshi).

It is the home of a very popular Gopalakrishna temple and a center for nightly folk opera called Yakshagaana. The temple of Ananthapura is about 5-6 Kilometres east of Kumbla enroute to Puttur.

It is a major hub of trade for popular local crops such as betel nut (areca or 'adike') and coconut.
