Kuldevta

KULDEVTA: Also spelled or known as Kuldaiwat or kuldev. The English translation of the word is family deity. Every Hindu family has a its family deity. The word Kul means family or clan and Devta means deity. The deity temple is usually a temple dedicated to Goddess Parvati but under hundreds of different names. Shiva and occasionally Vishnu under different names are also Kuldevta of many families. Shiva under the name of Khandoba is Kuldevta for a large number of families from Maharashtra. Hindu families make a pilgrimage to the Kuldevta temple to obtain blessing of the deity after an auspious occasion such as a wedding.
