Kudagitsune (管狐) is the Pipe Fox in Japanese mythology. It is a spirit that inhabits pipes and flutes, and other inanimate objects; as such, it is generally portrayed as a long thin furry creature. It is supposed to have the power to summon the elemental forces of wind, lightning, fire, and water, and it can also cast illusions. It is sometimes also called the Izuna (飯綱). (see also: Kitsune).
[edit] Kudagitsune in pop culture
- The kudagitsune appears in Digimon season 3, when the fox-like Sakuyamon summons multiple kudagitsunes to attack her enemies, and in the handheld game Digimon Acclerator Ultimate Genome, there is a Digimon called Kudamon, which is a kudagitsune Digimon (shown as a ghostly fox encircling a golden flute). Kudamon is also a character in the season 5, Digimon Savers.
- In the manga series xxxHolic, the main character Yuuko Ichihara receives a kudagitsune as payment for a favor done to an Ame-warashi (Rain Sprite). It loves to coil around Kimihiro Watanuki who is Yuuko's servant, and sometimes uses its powers to protect him from harm.
