Kublai Khan's Lost Fleet

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Kublai Khan tried invading Japan twice; once in 1274 and once in 1281. The second attempt may have used up to as many as 4400 ships. However it met with an unfortunate fate which caused many of the ships to be lost. The events leading up to the loss were poorly documented for hundreds of years so this fleet is sometime referred to as Kublai Khan's Lost Fleet. In both defeats however a typhoon is implicated as a strong factor. These two storms that saved Japan added a new phrase in the Japanese language, "kami kaze", meaning "divine wind". Several artifacts have been recovered from the seabottom of the Imari Gulf that reveal much about this lost fleet.
