KTUD-CA (Channel 25 analog) is an independent television station serving the Las Vegas, Nevada market owned and operated by the Greenspun Broadcasting, a wholly owned subsidiary of The Greenspun Corporation.

The "-CA" suffix in the call letters denotes the station's status as a "Class A" television station, a slight upgrade from its previous "low power" (-LP) designation.

The station now broadcasts a local newscast at 10:00 p.m., which is produced by CBS affiliate KLAS-TV (Channel 8).

[edit] History

After the Sinclair Broadcast Group acquired what was then known as KUPN (now KVMY) and switched the station's affiliation to WB Network in 1998, Las Vegas, Nevada was left without a UPN affiliate. The next year, a low power station, KCNG-LP, started broadcasting UPN on channel 25 (owned by Kong Broadcasting). After a series of ownership changes, Greenspun Broadcasting now owns the station.

On April 24, 2006, KTUD-CA announced that they were becoming an independent station, and not The CW as expected. The CW affiliation went to former independent KFBT, now KVCW.

KTUD-CA is low-powered, which means cable carriers are not bound by the FCC must-carry rule to carry KTUD on cable systems in the Las Vegas DMA. Cox Communications, the primary local cable company, refused to carry KCNG/KTUD for several years. It finally began to carry the station on Cox Cable channel 14. DirecTV also carries KTUD with the other "Las Vegas locals". Dish Network currently does not carry KTUD.

[edit] Newscasts

Eyewitness News is produced by KLAS with newscasts at 5 p.m. and 10 p.m.. It is currently anchored by Denise Saunders, who left KYW-TV in Philadelphia after a contract dispute in August 2004.

Ironically, Greenspun Broadcasting put KLAS on the air in 1953 as the first television station in Nevada. However, Greenspun has not owned KLAS in decades.
