[edit] Pianists

Hey, I noticed your article on Grant Johannesen. In the past few weeks I categorized most classical pianists (all I could find) into two categories - Classical pianists (the Pianists should have only articles on pop, jazz or... other kind of pianists) and, in Johannesen's case, American pianists (categorized by their nationality). I would love to collaborate with you if you intend to write more articles about pianists because I feel that they have been greatly neglected in the past of Wikipedia. --Missmarple 06:31, 2 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Is Wikipedia:List of Wikipedians by number of edits possibly what you mean, or something else on Wikipedia:Statistics? --Michael Snow 15:37, 13 Apr 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Lyric poetry

Wow, there wasn't an article before now, just a redirect to lyric? I have to agree with the comment by the person who first edited the page. Anyway, it looks like a good start.

I would mention that the opening phrase, calling it the "purest form of poetry", is arguably a value judgment. I can understand what is meant by it, but it warrants being qualified or explained more. Otherwise it's the sort of thing that partisans of dramatic poetry might object to (fortunately, people working on poetry articles don't get into many edit wars). Or if such a comment can be attributed to some significant figure, that would work as well.

I'll try and look for articles that need to be linked to this one. --Michael Snow 17:04, 14 Apr 2005 (UTC)

[edit] lots of edits, not an admin

Hi - I made a list of users who've been around long enough to have made lots of edits but aren't admins. It looks like you've left, but if you come back and are at all interested in becoming an admin, can you please add an '*' immediately before your name in this list? I've suggested folks nominating someone might want to puruse this list, although there is certainly no guarantee anyone will ever look at it. I've marked you on this list as "inactve". Feel free to update this as well. Thanks. -- Rick Block (talk) July 3, 2005 18:03 (UTC)

[edit] August 30

Done. You had added Federer, but his article says his birthday is August 8 - it appears that it's Roddick, not Federer, whose birthday is the 30th? --Michael Snow 4 July 2005 00:22 (UTC)

[edit] Wikiproject Years Survey

Hi. To get everybody thinking, I've created a survey about Year pages here. I'm telling all the participants of WikiProject Years and everyone else who has shown an interest in year pages or participated in the discussion. If you could check it out it would be appreciated, and tell anyone you think may be interested.Trevor macinnis 21:11, 28 July 2005 (UTC)

I'm not sure what's the best way to deal with it, as I don't usually follow this or get involved. I believe a fair number of them get removed as likely copyright violations, via Wikipedia:Images and media for deletion and related pages. --Michael Snow 07:03, 12 August 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Morone/Moroni

It seems this was largely because the Catholic Encyclopedia's article on him is Morone, but it elsewhere occasionally spells his name Moroni. Anyway, I've merged the two pages and their histories. --Michael Snow 19:48, 19 September 2005 (UTC)

[edit] AfD

People who deal regularly with deleting articles understandably develop an instinctive dislike for articles about things that are only in planning stages. That's because they're usually dealing with things like upcoming albums from garage bands, or some independent filmmaker's ambitious project that may never materialize. I think that's ultimately what's going on here, and it got noticed because you weren't logged in (people monitor articles created from IP addresses much more closely because most of the junk comes in that way).

Anyway, I've put in my argument for why it should stay. I'll watch what happens from here, but I think that will help clear things up. --Michael Snow 17:05, 11 November 2005 (UTC)

The deletion debate for this article. --Michael Snow 17:10, 11 November 2005 (UTC)

[edit] LDS categories

It depends on the circumstances, I think. For example, Category:Latter Day Saint denominations should almost certainly not be changed, at least if the titles of the articles on the other denominations correctly indicate their preferred spellings. It appears that some categories already use Latter-day Saint because they specifically limit themselves to members of this church. If that limitation is not inherent in how the category is defined, it may not be as appropriate. Glancing at a few articles on RLDS/Community of Christ leaders, they tend not to have been categorized at all (but Frederick M. Smith is in Category:Latter Day Saint leaders), so the contents of the categories may be a little skewed. For that matter, I don't know what shorthand you would use these days to indicate a member of the Community of Christ. Perhaps the issue of categorization practices should be raised with the LDS WikiProject. I'm sure that at least some of the spelling and naming conventions have had to be hashed out before because of differences like this. --Michael Snow 17:29, 15 November 2005 (UTC)

I have no idea on the hyphenation of African American. Just glancing at the titles of works cited as references for that article, it appears both with and without, so I would guess that the literature on the subject lacks a consistent standard. --Michael Snow 19:30, 15 November 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Extended quotes

In terms of markup, I believe they're handled simply by using HTML tags, as in <blockquote></blockquote>. I would assume that the stylistic standards for it are the same as anywhere else; if it's not in the Manual of Style, it's probably just because there's never been any real controversy about it. --Michael Snow 16:56, 17 November 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Israeli politics

I think it was more the fact that your editing also removed a significant chunk of material, which most people treat as inherently suspicious and especially coming from someone who isn't logged in. That being said, articles on Arab and Israeli issues are often watched closely and fought over considerably, so progress there tends to be slow and sometimes has to be hashed out point by point. --Michael Snow 17:46, 29 November 2005 (UTC)

Well, I've tried to combine some of the useful material from before with what you added, and replaced the outdated election breakdown with a link to an article specifically about that election, which contains the same information. I also explained what I was doing in the edit summary. Nobody's reverted me yet, so hopefully it can survive that way. --Michael Snow 19:49, 29 November 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Image Tagging Image:Corsica.jpg

Note: this comment is part of a synchronised thread. You can reply by clicking the [edit] link next to the comment's heading, or following this link. To ensure that you can see any further responses I make, add this page to your watchlist. Once you have replied, feel free to remove this boilerplate.

Thanks for uploading Image:Corsica.jpg. I notice the image page currently doesn't specify who created the image, so the copyright status is therefore unclear. If you have not created the image yourself then you need to argue that we have the right to use the image on Wikipedia (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the image yourself then you should also specify where you found it, i.e., in most cases link to the website where you got it, and the terms of use for content from that page.

If the image also doesn't have a copyright tag then you must also add one. If you created/took the picture then you can use GFDL to release it under the GFDL. If you can claim fair use use article name or fairuse. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other images, please check that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. You can find a list of image pages you have edited by going to "Your contributions" from your user page and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any unsourced and untagged images will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thanks so much. Ingoolemo talk 18:55, 6 December 2005 (UTC)

The Corsica image came from the French Wikipedia site. Ksnow 17:14, 9 December 2005 (UTC)Ksnow
I know it came from the French site, but you need to specify its exact URL. I haven't been able to find the image on the French Wikipedia, because it has a different name and isn't used in the French article on Corsica. Ingoolemo talk 17:28, 9 December 2005 (UTC)
At the time I borrowed it, I think it was in the article on Corsica. Ksnow 17:30, 9 December 2005 (UTC)Ksnow
I checked through the history of the french page (fr:Corse), and I couldn't find any occurrences of the image around the time that it was uploaded. An fr:Image:Corse.png did exist, but it has since been deleted. In short, I can't verify the source. Ingoolemo talk 19:34, 9 December 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Berchtesgaden

Hi - thanks for your edits! I thought I'd follow up and ask to see what we missed anything. The Berghof was retained and serves as a retreat for the American military. - you probably meant the Berchtesgadener Hof[1], not Hitler's former residence, the Berghof. The hotel was vacated in 1996 and it looks like it's going to be demolished soon. General Walker Hotel (former Platterhof) has been already torn down. Jbetak 17:50, 17 January 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Please check your WP:NA entry

Greetings, editor! Your name appears on Wikipedia:List of non-admins with high edit counts. If you have not done so lately, please take a look at that page and check your listing to be sure that following the particulars are correct:

 1. If you are an admin, please remove your name from the list.
 2. If you are currently interested in being considered for adminship, please be sure your name is in bold; if you are opposed to being considered for adminship, please cross out your name (but do not delete it, as it will automatically be re-added in the next page update).
 3. Please check to see if you are in the right category for classification by number of edits.

Thank you, and have a wiki wiki day! BDAbramson T 03:49, 17 February 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Laser Camera System

I disagree with you about the need for caps for the Laser Camera System. It is an auto-synchronous triangulation scanning laser camera (no caps). The product name is Laser Camera System (caps). As a wikipedia rookie, I figured I'd just point this out and let you decide whether to change it. --Rctaylor 15:11, 29 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Compliments

I haven't seen any particular instruction, so anything unusual is probably just coincidence. Obviously people could always stand to be more friendly instead of combative, and I'm sure most good work goes largely unacknowledged. --Michael Snow 18:57, 24 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Muller

The reason that the link for Karl Alex Muller is broken is because the article had to be deleted for copyright reasons; I believe there's an article in the Signpost about it. It needs to be re-created. DS 18:04, 5 November 2006 (UTC)

Okay, that's good work. Now you can make a redirect; that's where you have a plausible alternate name for the article, and you make it a pointer to the actual name. Here's how to do it.
First, you have the article Actual Article Name. Then, you create the article Alternate Article Name. The content of "Alternate Article Name" should be as follows: #redirect Actual Article Name - and nothing else. Nothing before or after. Then just save it as a new article, and it'll point you to the actual article name. DS 21:20, 5 November 2006 (UTC)

No, the article is fine, but the link in the table needs to be fixed. Ksnow 21:23, 5 November 2006 (UTC)Ksnow

No, you're missing my point. Instead of changing (altername name) to (actual name) - considering that (alternate name) might be used in many different articles - just create a redirect so that (alternate name) points to (actual name). DS 22:13, 5 November 2006 (UTC)

I can't find any problem now. What happened, I think, is that in addition to the previous article being deleted, because it had been copied from Britannica, somebody deleted the redirect as well (which was used in the template). Somebody else has since re-created the redirect, so I think it's cleared up. --Michael Snow 21:09, 6 November 2006 (UTC)

I did some cleaning up on the physics laureates articles the other night. I think I fixed the link to Muller.
By the way, I notice that you have been replacing the Nobel physics laureate template with the really annoying Nobel Prize in Physics template. Any particular reason? It's much too big, and pretty worthless. This volume of information is better handled with a list than a navbox.--Srleffler 00:01, 7 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Municipalities of Grisons/Graubünden

Hi there. I see that you have recently been creating articles about municipalities of Grisons/Graubünden. You might like to know that there is a set of templates ('navboxes') you can add to each article that creates a list of the municipalities of that district. For example, to Ausserferrera, I have added . The templates are at Category:Swiss district templates. If you need help creating the remaining municipality articles, let me know. I created a Perl script that extracted all the table information from the German Wikipedia and created a standard stub article for each municipality, including all those in Graubünden. Docu was going to run a bot (D6) to complete the rest, but it looks like he has moved on to other things. --BillC 23:43, 6 November 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for replying! (I created a few municipality articles myself recently. I hope you don't think I was treading on your toes by doing so.) I created most of the navigation bar templates in that category, so the chance is high that it was I who chose to use 'Grisons' rather than 'Graubünden'. I can't remember my reasons for doing so now, but I suspect that it was because the article on the districts_of_Switzerland called it 'Grisons'. If, as you say, this is not appropriate, then of course it should be changed. I can do this if you like. I have stub articles on all the remaining municipalities sitting on my hard disk. Creating them is a matter of locating the correct file (listed under municipality code) and pasting it into the new article after checking that the links are correct. --BillC 01:23, 7 November 2006 (UTC)
OK, we can do that then. I can tackle the templates if you do the lists. You probably want to move Category:Municipalities of Grisons to Category:Municipalities of Graubünden as well. Editing the template will also change the category as well, since these are linked by means of a <includeonly> tag. --BillC 01:33, 7 November 2006 (UTC)
Add: it's late here. I think I shall call it a night and tackle this tomorrow. It doesn't look as if it is trivially easy to move/rename a category, but I am sure it can be done. --BillC 01:38, 7 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Sound files

Wikipedia:Media help (Ogg) gives some instructions. I downloaded one of the options to run with Windows Media Player, though I don't remember which. It looks like supposedly Realplayer can do it, at least in some versions, if you can get to that option instead. --Michael Snow 23:38, 14 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Mountain Passes

Where are you getting your information on mountain passes? Katr67 07:49, 28 November 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for letting me know. I noticed a couple of the Oregon ones weren't quite right when I verified them with USGS, just so you know. My atlas had some of them wrong too. I don't know if you're still watching those pages. Thanks! Katr67 23:20, 29 November 2006 (UTC)
