Katherine Shaw Bethea Hospital has been an active participant in the health of Dixon and our surrounding communities for 100 years. From the day our doors opened on January 1, 1897, the mission of the hospital has been to provide skilled, compassionate healthcare in a facility equipped with the latest technology and with a well-trained, professional staff. In time there have been changes in technology and growth in our building and our services, but what has remained constant is the commitment to providing top-quality care.
KSB Hospital is a 100-bed acute care facility offering a variety of ancillary services. From obstetrics to occupational and sports medicine, from behavioral health care to cardiac rehabilitation, KSB offers programs that reflect our desire to meet the growing, changing needs of those we serve and to remain focused on the picture of health.
When nine women opened KSB to the public in January 1897, medical treatment was still in its infancy. Most, if not all, medicines were derivatives of herbs or flowers. Between 3,000 and 5,000 citizens toured the new Dixon Public Hospital on that New Year’s Day.
In the ensuing years many changes and additions took place on the site where the original hospital was built. In the 1970s many changes took place and the hospital completed a number of new departments that reflected the advances taking place nationwide in medical care at the time:
Intensive Care Unit – February 1972 Cardiac Evaluation and Rehabilitation, August 1977 Emergency Department, April 1978 Home Care Department, June 1976 Medical Arts Clinic, January 1973 Renal Dialysis Unit, October 1978 In the 1980s several significant additions further expanded KSBís facilities. Today, the configuration of the hospitalís interior changes constantly to meet the needs of current medical practice. June of 2006 marked the opening of our $3 million state-of-the-art Cardiovascular Services Lab and a new Endoscopy area, among others.
Today, a look around at the various departments that make up KSB Hospital reveals a contemporary medical facility that is proud to offer patients the finest service possible, yet is never content to merely coast on its past accomplishments.
