Kristian Sarkies (born October 25, 1986) is an Australian football (soccer) player who currently plays as an attacking midfielder for the Melbourne Victory in the newly formed Hyundai A-League.
[edit] Professional Career
Sarkies, signed from South Melbourne after the collapse of the national league, has been a fringe player for the team, with Coach Ernie Merrick choosing to leave him out of the squad, but he has recently returned on the condition that he agree to help the defence more. Many of the fans disliked Ernie Merrick's decision due to Sarkies natural attacking style and he was often left out when he was starting to impress with excellent form.
He is a promising midfielder with an eye for goal and is known for his powerfully hit set-pieces. He has been quoted that: “I practice my free kicks for hours a day, normally I like to kick around 150 in the net before I stop,” in an interview for a local football magazine.
[edit] International Career
Sarkies was called up by coach Guus Hiddink to be part of the "train-on" squad leading up to Australia's appearance at the 2006 FIFA World Cup. He won his first cap in the dying minutes of Australia's 3-1 friendly win against Lichtenstein on the 8th of June 2006.
He was then kept in Germany with the Socceroos after he was given a personal invitation from Guus Hiddink to stay with the team until after the first group match with Japan. The reason for this invitation has been confirmed that their was uncertainty about the fitness of Tim Cahill and Harry Kewell, Hiddink had planned that if eathier were to be unable to be fit for any World Cup matches than Kristian Sarkies would take their place.
He has also represented his country at all youth levels (U-17, U-20 and U-23) and is set to be involved in Australia's long qualifying campaign for the Beijing 2008 Olympics.
