Kristen is the oldest daughter of Stephanie (Susan Flannery) and Eric Forrester (John McCook).

Kristen was based mainly in New York. A freelance fashion designer, she worked at Forrester Creations from 1987 until 1990, when her ailing relationship with Stephanie caused her to resign. Believing Kristen to be frigid and too attached to Eric, Stephanie hired gigolo Clarke Garrison (Daniel McVicar) to romance Kristen. Eventually the two fell in love and married in 1988. The romance became rocky after Clarke discovered that Margo Lynley (Lauren Koslow), Eric's assistant, was pregnant with his baby. Margo then brought fashion photographer Mick Savage (Jeff Conaway) into town in a ploy to break up Clarke and Kristen. Mick and Kristen eventually left town together. Still unattached, Kristen made brief appearances at various Forrester family gatherings, including acting as Brooke's (Katherine Kelly Lang) matron of honor when she married Kristen's brother Ridge (Ronn Moss) in 1994.

Kristen returned to Los Angeles in 2001. To ensure Kristen stayed in town, Eric entrusted Kristen an assignment on behalf of Forrester Creations to recruit Tony Dominguez (Paulo Benedeti) onto the design staff. A romance soon blossomed between the two. Stephanie and Kristen then called a truce, clearing years of misunderstandings. Tony's ex-lover, Sofia Alonso (Sandra Vidal), was at first a threat to Tony and Kristen's union, but eventually Sofia and Kristen became friends. The sudden death of Tony's friend, Ellen, prompted him to investigate the circumstances of her passing. Tony found out from Ellen's doctor that she was HIV positive, and had himself tested. Kristen was unsure as to the direction her relationship with Tony was going after he became distant. A devastated Kristen learned of Tony's secret that had plagued him for weeks - that he was HIV positive. Kristen tested negative for HIV.

A determined Kristen continued to pursue Tony and her insistence led to Tony giving in to their passion for one another. Kristen and Tony were completely aware of the ramifications of continuing their relationship before revealing the secret it to Eric and Stephanie. Kristen then proposed to Tony and he accepted. Although Eric was at first opposed to Kristen marrying Tony, he eventually accepted Tony after Tony asked him to stand up as his best man. After Tony and Kristen married, they honeymooned in Africa. There, they encountered Zende (Daniel E. Smith), an orphan who was accused of stealing a role of film from them. Later at Zende's orphanage, Tony and Kristen learned that many of the children there are orphans of AIDS. Tony and Kristen fell in love with Zende and wanted to raise him. After leaving Africa they returned a short while later to adopt Zende and took him back to LA with them.

The Dominguez family soon moved to Florida, and Kristen returns frequently for family events.
