[edit] General

The Kribensis, Pelvicachromis pulcher, is a small tropical fish of the cichlid family, native to Southern Nigeria as well as the coastal areas of Cameroon, where it is found in fresh and brackish water, with pH range of 5.0–8.0 and a temperature range of 24–25°C. it is also known as the krib, rainbow krib and purple cichlid. The common names "krib", "kribbie" and "kribensis" are actually based on the original binomial, Pelmatochromis kribensis, which was later changed to Pelmatochromis pulcher, and finally to its current designation. This species should not be confused with Kribia kribensis (also sometimes called Eleotris kribensis), a species of Sleeper. It grows up to 10 cms.

This fish has an elongate body with two dark stripes on the upper half of the body and a big red spot on the belly. Male are larger and more brightly coloured, but the female will also colour up when ready for breeding.

The kribensis prefers hard water, although it will accept most water types. Feeding is relatively easy as this species is omnivorous and will eat just about anything that fits in their mouths, but their diet must include some meat, even if not much. The kribensis particularly like live foods such as bloodworm.

The kribensis are prolific breeder. They lay about 100-200 eggs on roof of caves such as coconut shells and flower pots. Female guards the eggs while the male guards the territory. Both parents tend the fry, but the male does most. Although the kribs are relatively peaceful, they could become quite teritorial when breeding. This species is best kept in multiple pairs in a large tank or a single pair in a small tank. They should be provided with good covers or caves.

[edit] Other colour varieties

Besides the common colouration, "super red" kribensis is also available. However, confusion may arise as there are also other Pelvicachromis species with similar colourations.
