[edit] Biography
A grade-school friend and general antagonist of Tomo's, Yomi carries herself as the most mature and serious of the group. Her seriousness and stability is often used as a comic foil to the other characters' silliness. It's not uncommon for Yomi to either chide or be struck dumb by her friends' flippant behavior. However, even Yomi will lose it now and then if put through enough stress and aggravation, something Tomo dutifully supplies. This had ended on more than one occasion with Tomo unconscious on the floor. And while she likes to think that she's well above the childish behavior of some of her classmates, Yomi has shown that she can be just as bad as they are from time to time, doing such things as getting Chiyo to infuse a shrine charm with some of her intelligence so she could pass her college entrance exams (a tactic Tomo and Osaka both employed, ending with them both getting accepted to college before Yomi did). She is both smart and athletic: her grades are second only to Chiyo-chan's, and while she isn't better than Sakaki or Kagura at sports, she holds her own. It is suggested that her character is very similar to that of her physical education teacher, Minamo Kurosawa.
Despite appearing quite healthy and fit, Yomi is almost always watching her weight, though ironically remains a great lover of food (particularly sweets and spiced dishes). Her list of failed or resigned diets is numerable; she's even been known to write letters to radio talk hosts to seek advice or give her progress on the latest weight-loss trends. Unfortunately for Yomi and all concerned, her failings not only fall on dietary plans but karaoke; her talents as a singer can be described as abominable at best. She does have a playful side to her personality which she prefers to hide from the rest and sometimes has difficulty expressing. She is, however, fond of pranks, such as the infamous Hiccups incident.
[edit] Trivia
- In a Christmas episode, the girls sing karaoke. Yomi sings the ending theme to The Very Short Azumanga Daioh Movie, "Sarabai". In that episode Yomi is said to be a horrible singer, but on an album of character songs released subsequently to the series, Yomi's Japanese voice actress sings two entirely different songs in a somewhat more "normal" fashion. (Apparently it is the character who is an atrocious singer, not the actress).
- The author admits that her prototype is Tomoko Hoshina from To Heart. He also is a devotee of her. Further, there are not a few Japanese AzuDai lovers considering that from To Heart he got numerous ideas of characters besides Yomi. [citation needed]
- Yomi's voice actress, Rie Tanaka, is actually a good singer as shown in Gundam Seed and Gundam Seed Destiny, where she voiced Lacus Clyne. It is opposed to Yomi's singing ability in this anime.
- Yomi is a popular fad on the imageboard 4chan. In one usage, the poster shouts "JELLY ROLLS, JELLY ROLLS! NOBODY LOVES YOU," along with a Yomi picture; in another, Yomi herself is portrayed as a militaristic political leader bent on ridding the world of furries.
