Kotdwara is a town in Garhwal district in the Indian state of Uttaranchal.

As of 2001 India censusGRIndia, Kotdwara had a population of 25,400. Males constitute 53% of the population and females 47%. Kotdwara has an average literacy rate of 70%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 74%, and female literacy is 66%. In Kotdwara, 14% of the population is under 6 years of age.


Kotdwara is a small town on the foothills of lush green Shivalik Hills of Himalayan range of Gharwal. It is a city which is locked by hills and mountains from the three sides. The name Kotdwara signifies the gateway (Dwara) to the Abode of God (Dev Bhoomi), since this is the place where the pilgrimage to two famous temples Kedarnath (Lordh Shiva) and Badrinath (Lord Vishnu) is started. It is situated on the banks of three seasonal rivers namely Khoo, Malin, and Sukhro. This was the place of meditation for sages and rishis. Karnav Risihi had his famous ashram here. It is this ashram at the bank of Malin Nadi where Shakuntala lost her ring and her son Bharat ( the person on whose name India's name BHARAT is kept), was born at Bharat Nagar which is nearby kotdwara. Some Temples are Durga Devi & Sidhbali Mandir. These temples are famous for their natural beautiness and the holy spirits which they spread among the people.Many person come in kotdwara to see these temple. There is the badrinath route which is the way to one of the Hindu Pilgrims . Kotdwara is a city which is situated on the border of U.P and Uttaranchal. The city of Kotdwar has one degree college affilated by the University of Garhwal. It has many well schools like St. Joseph's Convent, D.A.V etc. The city is surrounded by many small villages and towns which are generally termed as Bhabar area or kashirampur. The Garhwal Regiment also has itsbases here at Kotdwar.
