[edit] I'm leaving

I have decided to leave before Wikipediing becomes a burden instead of fun. A few thoughts of mine are archived here, but their essence is already represented in Larry's farewell message:

"All the best to Wikipedia and Wikipedians. May you continue

 • to be open and warmly welcoming, not insular,
 • to be focused singlemindedly on writing an encyclopedia, not on Usenet-style debate,
 • to recognize and praise the best work, work that is detailed, factual, well-informed, and well-referenced,
 • to work to understand what neutrality requires and why it is so essential to and good for this project,
 • to treat your fellow productive, well-meaning members of Wikipedia with respect and good will,
 • to attract and honor good people who know a lot and can write about it well, and
 • to show the door to trolls, vandals, and wiki-anarchists, who if permitted would waste your time and create a poisonous atmosphere here."

There are too many good Wikipedians to thank them all personally, so let me just say it's been a lot of fun with you. I don't think I'll come back. Farewell.

[edit] Bye

Hate to see you leave, Kosebamse. You were doing fantastic work... JFW | T@lk 09:29, 27 Apr 2004 (UTC)

ditto!
(although I hope you'll pass by some time to see what's become of this idea)
--Ruhrjung 16:25, 27 Apr 2004 (UTC)

I'm really sorry to see you go. You'll be missed. Angela. 17:39, Apr 27, 2004 (UTC)

Hey, Kos: JUST DO LESS! REally, no one wil be upset. As physicians we often do not have the ability to do something half way. Wikipedia gives you a chance to just throw out a word or two, sit back, see what others do, and enjoy the diversity. We'd like to have you stay, just throw out a pearl here and there. It's OK to not do much. Steve Holland, M.D. Kd4ttc 21:55, 28 Apr 2004 (UTC)

I thank you for your message Kose, though I am not sure I deserve it. But it is very kind. I hope your leave is not permanent. I sure know how stressing this place can be :-(. I wish you my best...

I offer you this one

Image:Violette1(s).jpg

In french, the name is pensée, which means "thought". I already offered it once, but I think it is appropriate to the situation :-) SweetLittleFluffyThing

A little late, because I'm on "reality override", so I don't know if you'll ever see this, Kosebamse, but it makes me feel sad to see you leave. I hope you'll reconsider and come back to write all those articles you once wanted to write—Wikipedia is still missing articles on the Kruzenshtern, the Pamir, the Flying P Liners, and the Gorch Fock... Writing them would certainly be more fun than battling trolls! Anyway, good luck! Lupo 08:44, 5 May 2004 (UTC)

As numerous others have said, it's sad to see you leave. Good luck -- Ams80 21:53, 5 May 2004 (UTC)

[edit] Back

Looks like I'm back. I am afraid the extent of my involvement will remain very limited and unfortunately, I will mostly have to stay away from my field of expertise, medicine. I am still an admin but currently don't feel like getting involved in community affairs. So please don't expect too much; anyway, I hope it will be a nice experience. Kosebamse 10:48, 17 Sep 2004 (UTC)

It is good to see you back. If you don't know already, Wik departed a little while after you left (I'm not trying to drag you back into community affairs, just thought you would want to know since you had some dealings with him). Do what you can to work on the pleasant side of Wikipedia instead of fighting in the wars. If you're looking for something that may be rewarding, I recall you once worked on a major rewrite of Baseball. Currently there's a renewed push to bring that up to featured article status, so perhaps your help would be useful there if that's not too much wikipolitics for you. Anyway, welcome back at long last, we have missed you. --Michael Snow 16:28, 17 Sep 2004 (UTC)

Thanks Michael, it's good to be back and to feel welcome again :) And thanks to all those who wrote me in e-mail and on this page here, for your kind and insightful words.

I hope I did not sound too abrupt or harsh on my departure in spring - but I was really fed up and exhausted then. You are right in supposing that it was to do with Wik (who was near the height of his war against everybody at that time), and things looked like I had to make a choice between losing my temper and going away. Wik wasn't the only reason, I have a real life after all, and I needed to be certain that I can resist the temptation of Wikiholism. As I said, I will contribute to a limited extent and indeed try to stay on the pleasant side for now (next little project: upload pictures from vacation in Norway). Thanks for the invitation to the baseball article, I'll sure have a look, but will take it easy, and please don't be disappointed if I don't return to my earlier level of involvement.

Again, thanks everybody. Kosebamse 17:38, 17 Sep 2004 (UTC) Ceterum censeo that in terms of policy, we need three rules and nothing else: Respect your fellow Wikipedians. Respect NPOV and the GFDL. And when in doubt, apply common sense. Kosebamse

Welcome back! It's great to see you've returned. Angela.

Thanks :) Kosebamse 15:08, 7 Oct 2004 (UTC)

[edit] About 'Reise, Reise'

Your explanation about the translation of the album Reise Reise by Rammstein is interesting as it gives a new point of view to the album name for foreigners, for whom the easy translation would be voyage, voyage. For this reason, I'd encourage you to add this information to the articles instead of removing the wrong translation. If you do so, make it a bit more extense in order to make it more comprehensible for everyone (Like saying it could stand for Los, los! in modern German, or something similar). Thanks for making it clear. -KeyStorm 19:57, 19 Sep 2004 (UTC)

I have not added that information because I am not sure whether the album title does indeed refer to the meaning that I have described, or perhaps a pun on it, or perhaps something unrelated. Also, it is not impossible that it title refers to the imperative form of "reisen" (to travel), at least it would be grammatically correct (though it makes little sense). I guess one would have to know the lyrics to decide this question. Kosebamse 20:05, 19 Sep 2004 (UTC)

You're right, I also though it could be Reise (du), reise (du), being then 'travel, travel'. Anyway both are related to be generically translatable as let's go, let's go! wich would make sense for either the old Seemannslied-expression and the imperative. As my German is not as native as I'd wish it to be, you could make a little essay about the name and its translation explaining every option, if you have some time. -KeyStorm 20:28, 19 Sep 2004 (UTC)

Kosebamse, you were right. See Talk:Reise Reise. Lupo 12:23, 26 Sep 2004 (UTC)

[edit] You're back!

Kosebamse, you're back! Very pleased. Please stay and enjoy doctoring Wikipedia. It's been a bit quiet lately... JFW | T@lk 20:10, 23 Oct 2004 (UTC)

Very pleased myself. It looks like I'll stay, but it may well be that I won't be as active as before, sorry about that, but it's better than being totally absent. Best regards, Kosebamse 15:38, 25 Oct 2004 (UTC)
Hey Kosebamse... the strange thing about wikiwork is that people can walk in each others footprints in such a close but distant way. It's good great to have another wikipedian with a interest passing interest in the administration of ethers... especially one whose footsteps I've been meandering past for so long. Like JFW, I'm glad your back too! best wishes Erich 13:56, 29 Nov 2004 (UTC)
Hey Erich, it's nice to see you improving so many of my early works (not that they could ever be polished enough). I hope I can do a little of the same with yours. Hope you'll be around some more again (in which case I'd strongly suggest that you should become a sysop, BTW). Best wishes, Kosebamse 18:29, 29 Nov 2004 (UTC)

[edit] Gluehwein vs mulled wine

Kosebamse, thanks! My bad, I should have looked into it in detail before posting. Cheers, Metlin 22:50, 23 Oct 2004 (UTC)

No prob. Have fun! Kosebamse 15:38, 25 Oct 2004 (UTC)

[edit] Lir

And what happaned at New Imperialism? 172 chose to discuss, and then, since I was banned -- he chose not to discuss. As a result, the page has had no subsequent progress. Lir

I don't know the details of your history as a Wikipedian. You were here before me, you were banned, were allowed to return (which I appreciate), and you seem to take extended Wikibreaks lately. I have not followed the history of that page with respect to your presence or non-presence, so it may well be true what you say about 172. But when I looked in the past (and I did quite a few times), that page was either protected or in a state of sterile, pedantic reversion war. If there was no progress after your ban this demonstrates that the situation was already out of hand. A user banned is even worse than a page protected, and both are consequences of a failure of the Wiki process, i.e. failure to cooperate on the part of those involved. [edit] Article Licensing

Hi, I've started a drive to get users to multi-license all of their contributions that they've made to either (1) all U.S. state, county, and city articles or (2) all articles, using the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike (CC-by-sa) v1.0 and v2.0 Licenses or into the public domain if they prefer. The CC-by-sa license is a true free documentation license that is similar to Wikipedia's license, the GFDL, but it allows other projects, such as WikiTravel, to use our articles. Since you are among the top 1000 Wikipedians by edits, I was wondering if you would be willing to multi-license all of your contributions or at minimum those on the geographic articles. Over 90% of people asked have agreed. For More Information:

To allow us to track those users who muli-license their contributions, many users copy and paste the "DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual" template into their user page, but there are other options at Template messages/User namespace. The following examples could also copied and pasted into your user page:

Option 1
I agree to multi-license all my contributions, with the exception of my user pages, as described below:
DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual

OR

Option 2
I agree to multi-license all my contributions to any U.S. state, county, or city article as described below:
DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual

Or if you wanted to place your work into the public domain, you could replace "DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual" with "MultiLicensePD". If you only prefer using the GFDL, I would like to know that too. Please let me know what you think at my talk page. It's important to know either way so no one keeps asking. -- Ram-Man (comment| talk)

I added a bit of a response to your comment on my talk page. Ram-Man (comment) (talk)[[]] 17:18, Dec 10, 2004 (UTC)
I've added a long comment about Jimbo and licensing to my talk page as a response to your comment. Ram-Man (comment) (talk)[[]] 21:39, Dec 14, 2004 (UTC)

[edit] Don't you just hate it when people remove info without taking to talk?

I know I do. I'm putting my info back, and if you don't like it then I suggest you take it to the talk page. We'll let the readers decide what is notable and what is not. If quite a few people object, we'll remove. If they don't, then that info stays in. That's the way it works, and you seem to have been around long enough to know it. Have a nice day. - Ta bu shi da yu 10:37, 27 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Well as you know there is another form of conversation, and that's the edit summary. You may have noticed that I use the summaries extensively, even for minor changes (except for Talk pages and pages in the Wikipedia namespace), because I believe that for many changes it is sufficient to describe them in the summary. You are obviously refering to my cutting some text out of Gay Nigger Association of America, specifically this edit. I have removed that piece of information because IMHO it does not significantly contribute to a factual, neutral, and comprehensive description of that organisation. Furthermore, I don't think that we should promote the use of troll scripts, and that's what I meant by "advertising". I don't deny that I really, really disagree with the presence of that article on Wikipedia, mostly because it's blatant self-advertising by a gang of idiots who succeeded convincing many Wikipedians of their notability through persistent trolling of Wikipedia, and it makes me extremely angry to see these idiots succeed with their tactics. But that will not affect my ambition to improve any article that stays on Wikipedia. Have a very nice day, and best regards, Kosebamse 17:39, 27 Dec 2004 (UTC)
Well, for starters, we don't use the edit summary to have conversations. That's not its function. I like the fact that you use the edit summary extensively though :-) I'm not promoting their use of a troll script, but that is an important part of their organisation... icky as it may be. The other thing about James A. C. Joyce was signficant IMO because I used to be a significant contributor to Kuro5hin and it caused a bit of a stir. Usually stuff like that didn't get through the queue. As for notability: well, that's your opinion, but you shouldn't let it affect the way you remove material for the article. Let's not argue about it though... that would give the GNAA a great deal of satisfaction. - Ta bu shi da yu 10:25, 28 Dec 2004 (UTC)
Well... I'm sort of thinking of removing the James A. C. Joyce thingo... not the script though. I don't really want to work too hard on that article that's all. I've got better articles to edit! Like fixing up History of Strathfield, New South Wales and Common Unix Printing System :-) Ta bu shi da yu 10:53, 28 Dec 2004 (UTC)

[edit] Blocks are not expiring

I'm posting this message on every admin who has made a block in the last few days. The title says it all really: because of a bug in the new software blocks are not expiring when their time is up. Until this is fixed can you get in the habit of manually unblocking a few everytime you block one. If everyone does this we'll be able to keep on top of things until the bug is sorted out. Note also that another bug is displaying indefinite blocks as expiring at the current time and date. obviously you don't want to unblock those. If you want to reply please do so here Theresa Knott (The snott rake) 10:09, 28 Dec 2004 (UTC)

[edit] Barents Sea

No, it's really no perfect picture. But unless one has a fairly good understanding in advance for the surrounding geography, one needs the context of surrounding lands in order to get a decent perception, don't you think? ...then there is the problem with chartographic projections. ...and then the ice situation.

I agree, of course, that Svalbard, Novaja Semlja, and the Kola Peninsula are relevant boundaries that ought to be depictured, but as with the White Sea I think a fairly good portion of the European continent is needed to give context to people from other parts of the world than Scandinavia (and Russia). I felt that this illustration ("borrowed" from the article on the White Sea) was better than no illustration at all, but a better one is definitely needed sooner or later. My hope is that my insertation of this map will prompt someone else to fix that.

 :-)))
--Ruhrjung 22:51, Jan 7, 2005 (UTC)

...BTW: Nice to see your contributions, again! --Ruhrjung 23:07, Jan 7, 2005 (UTC)

Hi again! Very nice to see you active again. I felt that the caption needed some clarification, and of course it would be a good idea to get a better map. Unfortunately I have been unable to find one that's PD or GFDL or such. I came across this when looking further into Bjørnøya which has become somewhat less stubby but still could do with some expansion. Don't know if your interest in Northern European geography reaches that far but if you can spare the time, could you look after it just for some proofreading? A fascinating subject, I even went as far as buying that schweineteure book that's listed as a source there. I'll try to find some more about Barents sea in it, BTW.
I have one other question that I would like to keep off Wikipedia but e-mailing you through your userpage doesn't seem to work. Would you mind checking your preferences or mail me through the link on my user page? Gott nytt år and happy editing, Kosebamse 10:22, 8 Jan 2005 (UTC)
I'm afraid my geographic interest barely stretches to Sortavala and the Valaam archipelago. ...hmmm, I'm actually not so sure even of that. My understanding is very superficial for anything North or East of Savonlinna.
...and proofreading? ...me??? You are luckily unaware of just how bad my English marks were when I studied that language in school, once upon a time! Since then, I've spoken English quite a lot — and read — but I use Microsoft Word for proofreading. :-))
E-mail sent to you!
Happy New Year!
--Ruhrjung 15:00, Jan 8, 2005 (UTC)
Ah well, my English is probably no better, and I would be happy if anybody took a look into my pet article. I've replied to your e-mail. Best wishes and happy editing, Kosebamse 17:01, 8 Jan 2005 (UTC)
OK, OK, I will! :-))
...done! I couldn't find anything particular to improve.
Thanks for e-mail.
I've corrected that mistake — and am grateful!
(But not extremely alarmed. I don't take that so very seriously.)
It was all, chiefly, a result of forgetfulness.
How very kind of you to remind me!
--Ruhrjung 22:57, Jan 8, 2005 (UTC)
'Twas a pleasure. Thanks for reading that article and have a nice day. :-) Kosebamse 18:11, 10 Jan 2005 (UTC)
