Korean Broadcasting System (KBS) is South Korea's premier public broadcaster and one of four major Korean television networks.
The state-operated network is best known for nightly newscasts and lavish historical dramas, although private broadcasters such as MBC and SBS have produced popular historical dramas in recent years as well.
KBS offers two terrestrial television, four satellite television and seven radio channels:
- commercial-free KBS1 (Launched 1961 as KBS-TV, news, current affairs, education and culture)
- KBS2 (Launched 1964 as TBC-TV, entertainment and sports)
- KBS Prime [Launched 1996 as KBS satellite 2, renamed(KBS Korea) at 2002, then current name at 2006, culture and drama]
- KBS Drama [Launched 2002, Formerly KBS Sky Drama(2003~2006)]
- KBS N Sports [Launched 2002, Formerly KBS Sports (2002~2003) and KBS Sky Sports (2003~2006)]
- KBS Joy (Launched 2006, comedy and quiz)
- KBS Radio 1 (Launched 1927, news, current affairs, documentary, culture and drama)
- KBS Radio 2 (Launched 1961 as KBS second Programme, entertainment),
- KBS Radio 3 [Launched 1964 as RSB, renamed (TBC Radio) at 1970s, then current name in 1980, and ceased broadcating at 1981, replaced by KBS Radio 2's regional service and Educational FM(now EBS FM), and re-launched 2000, spin-off from KBS Radio 2]
- KBS 1FM (Launched 1979, classical music and folkmusic)
- KBS 2FM(Launched 1966 as TBC-FM, popular music)
- KBS social radio (Launched 1975 as KBS Third Programme)
- KBS World radio (international sevice [see also RFI, BBC World Service and Radio Canada International]), as well as satellite and international services.
KBS is run by an independent public corporation that receives funds from the national government and collects revenues from mandatory television licence fees--similar to the BBC, France Télévisions and NHK.

[edit] KBS World
KBS World is the international service of KBS, broadcasting the best of KBS TV 1 & 2 to Koreans abroad. KBS World officially started broadcasting on July 1, 2003 and is currently available in North America, Europe, Australia & New Zealand, Japan and Southeast Asia. The station operates on a 24hr schedule with programming ranging from news, sports, dramas, variety shows and children's programs.
