Koninklijke Nederlandsch-Indische Luchtvaart Maatschappij

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Koninklijke Nederlandsch-Indische Luchtvaart Maatschappij (KNILM, in English: Royal Dutch East Indies Airways) is the former airline of the Dutch East Indies.

The company was formed on 16 July 1928 as an independent corporation and offered scheduled services across the East Indies, and to other parts of South-East Asia as well as to Sydney (via Darwin, Cloncurry and Charleville).

With the outbreak of war in the Pacific, and with Japanese invasion of the Dutch East Indies imminent, the remaining aircraft in the KNILM fleet were evacuated to Australia where they were acquired by the US military. They included the rare Douglas DC-5, of which only five were made for civilian use.

After the war, it resumed operations but was liquidated per 1 August, 1947.
