Kolvoord Starburst

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In the fictional Star Trek universe, the Kolvoord Starburst is a flight maneuver performed by five light spacecraft, requiring exceptional skill and ability. To execute the maneuver, the ships start out in a circular formation, then turn inwards to pass the center of the circle (and each other) as closely as possible. From this point, the craft fly radially outward, each leaving behind and igniting a plasma trail. When executed successfully, the light pattern created by the burning plasma resembles a starburst.

The origin of the name "Kolvoord" is uncertain.

In the TNG episode The First Duty, practicing the maneuvre led to a training accident that caused the death of Cadet Joshua Albert. As this flight pattern was already banned by the Academy following a previous tragedy, the remaining cadets, which included Wesley Crusher, attempted to conceal what they had been planning to do.
