The Kodaikanal International School is an international school for pre-school to Grade 12 students located in Kodaikanal, Tamil Nadu, southern India. Kodaikanal is a city in the Palani Hills. Founded in 1901, it is a Christian, co-educational, multicultural and boarding school for students aged 4-19. In 1976 it became the first school in India to offer the International Baccalaureate. It also awards its own high school diploma and is accredited by the Middle States Association of Schools and Colleges, USA and recognized by the Association of Indian Universities.

As of 2005 there are approximately 500 students, of whom half are foreign nationals. KIS is a diverse community and has teaching staff and students from over 30 different countries around the world. KIS is considered to be one of the most prestigious schools in India and is held in high esteem. KIS fees are comparable with other schools of this quality in India ranging from USD6000-7500 per term. There are two terms each year, from July to November and January to May.

KIS has one of the most beautiful campuses in India and overlooks a massive man-made lake. It is also considered to be one of the most liberal schools where the students are considered to have a progressive outlook on all matters being actively taught to reflect and question. KIS has three campuses, Highclerc for the High and Middle Schools, Ganga Campus for the Elementary School and the Wilderness Campus, located about two hours away in Poondi, which serves as an outdoor education program and will soon be used to provide a one-term, environmental learning experience to all 9th graders. There are also several compounds which house the dormitories and staff accommodation.

The selection process is quite simple, requiring applicants to take a test before they are admitted. The students from KIS have gone to study at some of the best universities in the world such as Stanford, MIT, The University of Pennsylvania and Brown University in the US, Oxford, LSE, University of Warwick and Cardiff in the UK, McGill,University of Toronto and York in Canada and a variety of other prestigious universities around the world.

KIS attracts students from many prominent families in India and other South countries. KIS participates in the International Honor Choir and Band held in Europe on a yearly basis and has an award winning program in Social Experience with on-going aid projects in several Southern Indian villages. KIS sends all Middle and High School students out on field trips for a week every year to enable them to have first hand experiences of life in India following a range of different themes.

KIS is a well-reputed school that was founded 105 years ago and is enjoying its present and looking forward to its future. Well-known families prefer to send their children here because the education offers a unique experience. Students are prepared for college in many ways: deadlines are strictly enforced so college deadlines will be no challenge, dorm life prepares students for life in college away from home and the freedom that students are given gives them a preview of the freedom that will be offered to them later on in life.
