Check numbers were removed on the grounds that they have no real meaning—because there are several series of checks. Checks numbers were reinstated on the grounds that they are "necessary to see which checks are missing". These grounds, however, are invalid, because there are several series of checks. You can tell almost nothing from a check number, and you can certainly not tell which checks are missing. Including the check numbers misleads for that reason: some people who do not understand the numbers will erroneously think—as has been demonstrated—that they can tell what is missing from the numbers.
