One of Donald Knuth's reward checks. Note that the machine-readable numbers at the bottom of the check have been randomly swapped or modified, so that no personal information about Don Knuth's personal bank account is leaked through this image.
The check itself was scanned by Schutz as Image:Knuth-check.png. The logos and design on the check have been pixelized by Simetrical. Both Simetrical and Schutz believe that the remaining content is not sufficiently original to warrant copyright. However, in order to be on the safe side, the image is used in Wikipedia under a fair use rationale

This work is copyrighted and unlicensed. It does not fall into one of the blanket fair use categories listed at Wikipedia:Fair use#Images or Wikipedia:Fair use#Audio_clips. However, it is believed that the use of this work in the articles "Donald Knuth" and "Knuth reward check":
- To illustrate the object in question;
- Where no free equivalent is available or could be created that would adequately give the same information;
- On the English-language Wikipedia ([1]), hosted on servers in the United States by the non-profit Wikimedia Foundation ([2]),

- Its inclusion in the article adds significantly to the article because it shows the subject of this article, which is a significant topic in the computer science world;
- The image is only being used for informational purposes;
- The image of a cheque has little or no commercial value, so that its inclusion in Wikipedia does not affect its potential market or value;
- There can be no free image of such a cheque.
If the image is subject to copyright, I (Schutz) feel it is covered by the U.S. fair use laws when linked from Donald Knuth because:
- Its inclusion in the article adds significantly to the article because it shows a topic very significantly and uniquely linked to the subject of the article, who is a significant person in the computer science world;
