Knocklyon

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Knocklyon (IPA pronunciation: [nɑk.laɪn]) is a suburb of Dublin, Ireland. As a relatively new area independent of its neighbours Templeogue, Firhouse and Rathfarnham, it was not marked as a separate entity on maps until recently. Its postcode is Dublin 16.

Its population as of 2002 is, according to the CSO, 4327, a decrease of 6.5% from 1996.

The Roman Catholic parish of Knocklyon was established in 1974 and placed under the patronage of St Colmcille. The church, primary school (consisting of both a junior and senior school to deal with large numbers, and one of the largest in Ireland) and community school all bear the name St Colmcille. The dedications of the School & Church come from St Colmcille's Holy Well located on the Ballycullen Road.

Knocklyon is evenly divided by the M50 motorway with residential housing estates like Glenvara Park, Castlefield Manor and Glenlyon now linked to the rest of Knocklyon by a footbridge. Suggestions as to whether these estates are properly part of Knocklyon may be firmly rebutted by the fact that Knocklyon Castle, of medieval origin, is located in close proximity to these housing developments which like the rest of Knocklyon have the same postal code of Dublin 16.

A focal point for the local community is the local supermarket, a Superquinn. Another is Delaneys, the local public house.
