"Knocked Out" was Paula Abdul's first single, and from the album Forever Your Girl in 1989. The song was written and produced by LA Reid and Babyface in early 1988. It was originally included on a Virgin Records Sampler for the launch of Virgin Records America and then in the spring of 1988 it was released as a single to test Abdul's commercial appeal. "Knocked Out" proved to be very successful for a low budget single; it became a Top 10 R&B hit and was very successful in the UK. "Knocked Out" could have been a much larger success if it would have had better promotion and a more interesting video. The original, extremely low budged, "Knocked Out" video was directed by Danny Kleinman, it featured Abdul and a large amount of dancers working out dance routines on a dance floor. In the video, Paula also singles out one of the male dancer with whom she sings the song too. It peeked at #41 in the US. A remixed version of "Knocked Out" was released again in the UK in 1990 as a single from Shut Up and Dance. For this release, a revamped video was re-made and re-released without Abdul actually in it, the video was plotted around a boxing match, while screen caps of Abdul's other videos were played in the background.
