Knights of the White Camelia

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Knights of the White Camelia was a white-supremacist group in the U.S. Southern states in the Reconstruction era and beyond. It was founded in 1867 in Louisiana and existed primarily in the Deep South. It was similar to and associated with the Ku Klux Klan. However, unlike the Klan, which drew much of its membership from lower-class southerners (primarily confederate veterans), the White Camelia consisted mainly of southerners who were or had been from the upper part of antebellum society. Its members were called Brothers and Knights, and its officials Commanders. Currently there is a Texas based Klan group which uses the name.
