Knife River Indian Villages National Historic Site is a United States National Historic Site located near the confluence of the Knife and Missouri Rivers in Stanton, North Dakota. The site preserves the ruins of three Northern Plains Indians villages of the Hidatsa and Mandan tribes, which were abandoned after a smallpox epidemic in 1837.
Knife River Indian Villages NHS is one of the few sites in the National Park System where an exhaustive archeological survey of all archeological sites within the park has been completed. This survey was carried out from 1976 to 1980.
