[edit] History

The station began broadcasting on July 8, 1954 under the call sign KWK-TV. CBS bought the station in 1958 and renamed it KMOX-TV (after the radio station). On May 16, 1986, Viacom (which at that point was a separate entity from CBS) bought the station and renamed it KMOV. This left St. Louis without a major network O&O until News Corporation's New World Communications (part of the Fox Television Stations Group) bought former-ABC station KTVI in 1995, and made it a Fox O&O. On June 1, 1997, Belo Corp. acquired KMOV in a three-way deal also involving Cox Communications and 2 stations in Seattle.

In February 2002, KMOV and the St. Louis Post-Dispatch launched the weekly news discussion program Extra Edition; hosted by weekday morning news anchor Marc Cox, Extra Edition airs every Saturday at 9:30 am.

In 2003, KMOV began producing and airing At The Zoo, a program that gives behind-the-scenes look at the world-class St. Louis Zoo; hosted by KMOV Chief Meteorologist Kent Ehrhardt and KMOV Education Reporter Anne Steffens, At The Zoo airs Saturday mornings at 10am.

[edit] News Operations

KMOV was the ratings leader in St. Louis for much of the 1960s and 1970s, but since the 1980s has usually been runner-up to KSDK. While KMOV does produce a high-quality newscast, the extra effort is rarely awarded with a ratings win. Only once in recent years (November 2004 when KSDK seemingly lost its hard news edge and began airing behind-the-scenes reports on various NBC shows) has KMOV beat KSDK in any newscast (10pm). Even with KMOV's advantage of real news, the November 2004 win was extremely small.

Perhaps one of the greatest challenges to KMOV in gaining a victory over KSDK is consistency. In recent years, there has been a near constant rotation of new faces appearing on KMOV's news. Two of three meteorologists have been at KMOV for fewer than one year and three of four main anchors have been with KMOV for fewer than four years. Meteorologist Reynolds Wolf's move to CNN and meteorologist Lyra O'Brien's move to WISN-TV in Milwaukee, both in March 2006 continued the problem.

  • "The CBS Enforcer Music Collection" Gari Communications, Inc. 2001-present

As KMOX-TV, it was the second station to use "Channel 2 News," originally written for sister station WBBM-TV in Chicago as its theme song.

In around 2002, KMOV updated its news set and added two other multipurpose sets. Both new sets are interview sets that can double as reporting/anchoring sets if the interview chairs are replaced with a news desk.

The graphics and music being used on-air debuted along with the new sets in about 2002. In 2004 the graphics were updated, but the music stayed the same. In early November 2006, the weather department update their graphics.
