KMD

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

KMD (Kausing Much Damage, or a positive Kause in a Much Damaged Society) was a hip-hop group in the early 1990s perhaps best known for launching the career of acclaimed MC/Producer MF Doom (known during his KMD tenure as Zev Love X). After guesting on 3rd Bass' "The Gas Face," the trio (Zev, brother Subroc, and Onyx) released the acclaimed and overlooked Mr. Hood full-length album. Their political outlook was similar to the group Brand Nubian, who guested on Hood; however, the style was more comical and included a great deal of clips from old children's recordings, mostly notably a sample of the Sesame Street character Bert on the single "Humrush"

The group, minus Onyx, recorded a controversial album titled Black Bastards in 1994 which was shelved due to the controversial album cover, depicting a Sambo caricature getting hung in a game of hangman (with the three letter "A"s the only letters not filled in). After the unexpected death of Subroc during the production of Black Bastards, Zev vanished from the music scene. Zev reemerged years later as MF DOOM (the MF standing for 'Metal Face') wearing a metal mask at all performances. His unusual style has earned him praise in many hip-hop circles.

KMD contained three members:

  • Zev Love X (later called MF DOOM)
  • DJ Subroc (Zev's younger brother, died in car accident)
  • Onyx, the Birthstone Kid
