Location of Kitwe in Zambia

Kitwe is the third-largest town in Zambia, with a population of 363,734 (2000 census). It lies in the Copperbelt, south west of Nkana Mine. It is home to Southdowns Airport, the Chembe Bird Sanctuary and lies at the end of a railway line to Livingstone via Lusaka.

Kitwe's mainstay is the Copper Mining Industry, while most other industries support the mines. It is the closest large city to the small scale emerald mines in the area. However, the mining industry has declined in importance to the residents due to the job cuts in recent years.

Kitwe is the hub of the copper mining industry in Zambia. It is also home to Copperbelt University and the private Lechwe School.
