Kirlia (キルリア Kiruria?) are one of the 493 fictional species of Pokémon creatures from the multi-billion-dollar[1] Pokémon media franchise – a collection of video games, anime, manga, books, trading cards and other media created by Satoshi Tajiri. The purpose of Kirlia in the games, anime and manga, as with all other Pokémon, is to battle both wild Pokémon, untamed creatures encountered while the player passes through various environments, and tamed Pokémon owned by Pokémon trainers.[2]

It is listed as Pokémon #281 in the National Pokédex, and #030 in the Hoenn Pokédex.

Kirlia is named for Semyon Davidovich Kirlian, a Russian scientist who conducted research into human psychic ability and other supernatural phenomena.

Kirlia must be evolved from a level 20 Ralts. Ralts can only be captured in the wild in Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire, Pokémon Emerald and Pokémon XD; a trade must be performed in order for a Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen and/or Pokémon Colosseum player to obtain one. Kirlia was one of the Pokémon players could choose in the Pokémon XD demo, along with Parasect, but only the E3 demo (not the retail store demo, which featured Gardevoir instead).

Kirlia closely resembles a ballet dancer; it stands on tip-toes at all times, and in Pokémon Colosseum and XD, it performs several ballet techniques while using its moves. It even does so when it faints. Although Kirlia can also be males, they all have a white flap of skin that opens up like a skirt. Under this thick white skin, there is a thin, green, delicate skin that covers their thin legs. They have two flat semicircular horns at an angle on their heads. These horns are amplifiers for their already powerful psychic powers. They have green hair with parts that look like ponytails on either side of their heads. Their eyes are red and large. Kirlia are quite small and light, which may be how they can sustain themselves on their tip-toes at all times. It may also be that they use their psychic abilities to stop them from feeling the pull of gravity, like Gardevoir and Alakazam.

Kirlia's brain is very highly developed. It uses psychokinetic power, which it amplifies by using its horns, and can render enemies helpless with its Psychic attack. When Kirlia uses its power, the air around it becomes distorted, creating mirages of nonexistent scenery. This may be a way for Kirlia to entrance the foe or confuse it. Kirlia's appearance and mood are heavily determined by the mood of its trainer. If the trainer is cheerful and happy, Kirlia will also be happy, and will spin and dance. The happier the trainer is, the more beautiful Kirlia will become. Likewise, a heartless trainer will result in a weak and saddened Kirlia, and its powers will have decreased significantly.

Kirlia is known not just for its powerful psychic abilities, but its beauty and grace as well. Because of their resemblance to a female ballet dancer, it is featured in many Pokémon movies as a princess needing rescue. Kirlia's beauty is shared by both males and females. As of yet, there is no way to tell a male Kirlia from a female Kirlia.

Kirlia looks somewhat similar to Cosmo in the anime Sonic X.

Kirlia have appeared in all three of the Hoenn games, Pokémon Ruby, Sapphire and Emerald, and also in Pokémon XD by evolving a Ralts at level 20. [3]. In Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen, and Pokémon Colosseum, the player can only obtain Kirlia through trading.

At base level, Kirlia have very weak stats, starting off with a low base HP of 38, as well as level 35 for both attack and defence stats. However, they have an improved SP Attack of 65 and SP Defence of 55 and a speed of 50. None of Kirlia's base stats are higher than 70.

In the upcoming Diamond and Pearl, Kirlia gets a branch Evolution. It can evolve into either Gardevoir or Erlade, which is a Psychic/Fighting type. Unlike the rest of the Ralts family, Erlade is 100% male: female Kirlias cannot use the Awakening Stone used to evolve to Erlade.

  • Kirlia first appears in the movie, Jirachi: Wishmaker. It belonged to Butler.
  • Kirlia had a small cameo in the episode "Lights, Camerupt, Action!" It played the role of Princess Kirlia in Elijah's new movie "Plusle and Minun and the Princess Rescue".
  • Appears in the episode "Do I Hear A Ralts" ("Rescue Ralts! Hurry Max!" in Japan), in which she is the daughter of a Gardevoir and the older sibling of a Ralts.
  • Appears in the episode "Fear Factory Phony" ("Psychic Vs. Ghost! Midnight Showdown!") in this episode Team Rocket's Wobbuffet fell in love with a Kirlia and the feeling was mutual.
