Kirby's Animal Friends are a group of fictional animals from the Kirby video game series. Their function is to aid Kirby with various unique abilities in Kirby's Dream Land 2 and Kirby's Dream Land 3, as well as having non-playable appearances in Kirby's Star Stacker and Kirby no Kirakira Kizzu. Also, in Kirby and the Crystal Shards, you can turn into a random animal friend by using the stone/cutter ability.

In Kirby's Dream Land 2, you must either battle a mini boss or regular enemy to rescue one that has been trapped. In Kirby's Dream Land 3 you will usually find around three of them waiting in special rooms, of which you can choose only one.

The animal friends will share Kirby's powers if he obtains a copy ability, but with often show different and unique effects depending on the power and what friend you're using. (For example, Parasol with Coo causes Coo to spin rapidbly, but Parasol and Rick has Rick balancing a Kirby ball on the top of it.)

[edit] Rick the Hamster

Rick is the first you encounter in Kirby's Dream Land 2. Kirby rides on his back and Rick can run, jump and climb walls, but he cannot fly. He has very good traction on ice and sand, making him very useful in frozen and desert levels. He has a girlfriend named Pick who wears a pink bow. You must bring Rick to her in a level in KDL3.

Rick appears as a minor character in the Kirby: Right Back at Ya! anime. He's very casual and often sarcastic, but doesn't seem to have a close friendship with Kirby. He lives with many other animals in Whispy Wood's forest, in a great tree called Acore.

He was given an Australian accent in the dub, but in the original is voiced by the same actress as Kirby, Makiko Omoto.

  • Clean - Rick uses a duster to attack enemies.
  • Burning - Rick breathes fire.
  • Cutter - Rick throws Kirby like a boomerang.
  • Spark - Rick shoots a small electric beam.
  • Ice - Joins with Kirby as a snowman, freezing enemies that come close.
  • Needle - Shoots spikes out his back like a hedgehog.
  • Stone - Rick turns into a round stone and Kirby rolls on him.
  • Parasol - Balances a Kirby ball on top of a Parasol.

Coo is a wise and level-headed bird with the ability to fly against strong winds. He carries Kirby with his feet. He is the only animal friend to have no significant other in Kirby's Dream Land 3.

He appears as a cameo character in the anime, and is respected by many others such as Tokkori. He is voiced by Chiro Kanzaki in the Japanese version.

  • Clean - Coo turns into a giant feather duster that Kirby uses to attack.
  • Burning - Shoots downward as a fireball.
  • Cutter - Shoots spinning feathers to attack.
  • Spark - A thunderbolt fires directly downward.
  • Ice - Coo fires shards of ice.
  • Needle - Kirby shoots a single huge spike downward.
  • Stone - Kirby turns to stone, causing Coo to fall quickly.
  • Parasol - Coo and Kirby twirl rapidly.

[edit] Kine the Ocean Sunfish

Kine is the most useful in underwater levels, being able to swim against the strongest currents. He carries Kirby inside his mouth. While he can stay on land indefinitly, he's very slow and awkward to move and cannot jump well. In the games he has a wife, a pink sunfish named Mine.

Kine was a slightly more prominent character in the anime than the other two, even getting an entire episode devoted to him. His personality is rather youthful and naive, and he has a huge crush on the character Tiff. He is voiced by Nobuo Tobita in the original.

  • Clean - A plunger comes from Kine's mouth.
  • Burning - Kine shoots rings of fire.
  • Cutter - Kine fires blade-like beams of energy.
  • Spark - A lightbulb pops from his mouth. You can either shoot it, or hold it there until it breaks, and attack enemies with the jagged edges.
  • Ice - Kine freezes solid.
  • Needle - Spikes shoot out all over his body.
  • Stone - Kirby turns into stone and Kine sinks rapidly, unable to move.
  • Parasol - A parasol pops out of his mouth and Kine twirls around.

[edit] Chuchu

There is some debate on just what Chuchu is. Many believe she is an octopus, others some sort of giant amoeba or slime. She is the only female animal friend, and rides sticking to Kirby's head. She has the ability to stick to ceilings and travel that way. She has a friend called Nyupun that looks like her, but yellow and wearing a sailor cap and a pink ribbon.

She never appears in the anime.

  • Clean - Chuchu and Kirby ride on a flying broom.
  • Burning - Chuchu acts as a hot air balloon, with Kirby breathing fire under her.
  • Cutter - Kirby swings Chuchu around like a blade.
  • Beam - Chuchu fires a single thin lazer.
  • Ice - Kirby spits out snowballs and Chuchu tosses them.
  • Needle - Chuchu shoots out spikes in all directions.
  • Stone - Kirby turns into a rock and Chuchu swings him around.
  • Parasol - Kirby and Chuchu spin around on an upside-down parasol.

Nago is a Japanese Bobtail and rolls Kirby in front of him like a ball. He has a triple-jump but cannot fly. He has a girlfriend who is a white cat called Shiro.

Nago never appeared in the anime, however he does appear on early design art.

  • Clean - Kirby turns into a brush that Nago pushes forward.
  • Burning - Kirby shoots out pillars of flame.
  • Cutter - Kirby shoots beams of energy up and forward.
  • Spark - Nago rubs Kirby to build up static, and destroys enemies as he rolls him forward.
  • Ice - Kirby shoots out ice to propel him and Nago upwards.
  • Needle - Kirby shoots spikes like a gun.
  • Stone - Nago slams down rock Kirby.
  • Parasol - Nago and Kirby use the parasol like a pogo stick.

[edit] Pitch the bird

Pitch from KDL3

Pitch is perhaps the youngest, and definitly the smallest of all the animal friends, even smaller than Kirby. While Kirby carries Pitch while they walk, Pitch will carry Kirby when he runs or flies but looked very strained when he does. Pitch is said to look up to and admire Coo, wanting to be as strong as he is when he grows up. Pitch's mother, a large pink bird, also appears in KDL3.

Pitch never appears in the anime.

  • Clean - Pitch turns into a bucket and Kirby uses him to lob water at enemies or water flowers.
  • Burning - Pitch turns into a fireball and rockets forward.
  • Cutter - Kirby uses Pitch as a boomerang.
  • Spark - Considered the most fun ability, Kirby can use a remote-control to send an electrified Pitch zooming around the screen.
  • Ice - Kirby winds Pitch like an icemaker to shoot out ice cubes.
  • Needle - Pitch rapidly pecks anything in front.
  • Stone - Pitch turns into a rock and falls quickly.
  • Parasol - Kirby hits Pitch with the parasol like a golf ball.
