[edit] Linking dates
...so the date format display preference -- May 10, 10 May, or (heaven forfend) 05-10 -- kicks in. Because on those pages it's the title, thus already in bold, the self-link doesn't even show. At the rate I'm going, I should have finished all 365 some time next Easter. Cool? –Hajor 04:43, 12 May 2005 (UTC)
- Yes. I understand now. It makes sense. Kingturtle 05:10, 12 May 2005 (UTC)
[edit] John Latham
Hi, I was just wondering why you chose to move John Latham (Australian jurist) to John Latham (jurist). The reason I ask is that this has created some double redirects from John Latham (Australia) (the original location, and the one I prefer). --bainer 04:46, 14 May 2005 (UTC)
- Disambiguation language should be as succinct as possible. (Australian jurist) is too much information....unless there was a (Canadian jurist) by the same name. John Latham (Australian) doesn't sound right...he is notable for being a Jurist, not for being Australian. Therefore, John Latham (jurist) is the most succinct and logical. Kingturtle 07:29, 14 May 2005 (UTC) P.S. i'll go and fix the double redirects. Kingturtle 07:29, 14 May 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Becoming an Admin
It's funny that you should ask as I was thinking about this after reading about someone else who has been trying to become an admin. Personally, I don't think I have been active long enough. I have too much yet to learn. So, I don't think I am ready to even ask yet. Maybe in a few months after I get more experience. On the plus side, I'm trying different things so I am learning from my mistakes. Vegaswikian 05:33, 14 May 2005 (UTC)
[edit] John Latham
Could I suggest that Sir John Latham is much better known than the 19th century ornithologist of the same name, and that he ought to get the John Latham article, with the bird guy being relegated to John Latham (ornithologist)? Adam 10:01, 14 May 2005 (UTC)
- That is most certainly fine with me. I was just trying to deal with the (Australian jurist) description. If Sir John deserves John Latham, make it so. Kingturtle 10:07, 14 May 2005 (UTC)
I'm not an admin. I was suggesting that you do it. Adam 10:20, 14 May 2005 (UTC)
- There are over 60 bird-related articles that link to John Latham. There are less than 10 articles that related to John Latham, the jurist. That might not be an indication of notoriety, but it *is* an indication of how much work is involved if the ornithology is moved. Each of those 60+ articles would have to be modified accordingly - and I don't have the energy tonight to get that done. So maybe I'll do it later this weekend when I have energy and feel refreshed. Kingturtle 10:30, 14 May 2005 (UTC)
P.S. why do you continue to decline nomination to adminship? Kingturtle 10:32, 14 May 2005 (UTC)
Because I don't have the temperament for it. I get in far too many heated arguments with the many fools who infest this project. I doubt I could resist the temptation to block them or protect articles (particularly ones I have written) from them. Adam 10:46, 14 May 2005 (UTC)

Vik! my apologies! i honestly intended to reply, but i got side-tracked, and bam - i forgot. i even mentioned to a friend that i was going to meet someone who could speek Esperanto (meaning YOU). so, i usually hang out at Caffe Pergolesi with my laptop, and that's where i do a lot of my wikipedia-ing. they have free wireless there. do you know of the place? [edit] JT
Noticed that you're an admin and that you've made reverts to the JT page, and I'm gessing you got there much as I did, checking Recent changes. Wondering if you'd look into the editing habits of 198.31.230.33...S/he hasn't engaged in serious vandalism, but the constant inaccurate and/or imprecise edits (especially after requests to discuss the logic behind the changes on the talk page) are becoming irritating. I'd appreciate it! Essjay 18:52, May 14, 2005 (UTC)

[edit] George Bush
The vandalism is normal...I see no evidence that there is any more than normal...--MONGO 02:47, 18 May 2005 (UTC)
- Vandalism for that article is normal. In this case, there were 14 revert-type edits in less than 30 minutes - and no other types of edits. Kingturtle 02:49, 18 May 2005 (UTC)
-
- Perhaps I didn't keep count...and not sure that keeping a count of the reverts matters one way or the other...however, you seem to be someone that has made a huge contribution to this enterprise and I'll certainly understand your reasoning...--MONGO 03:05, 18 May 2005 (UTC)
[edit] All I can say is "Sorry"
I'd just like to personally apologise for the edit to the Dalek page. I feel terrible that my attempt at humour was miscontrued and that I went too far. As you've noticed, I've since withdrawn my request for adminship. I'm now sending a personal apology to all those who've opposed the adminship because of my actions. - Ta bu shi da yu 02:29, 24 May 2005 (UTC)
- I thank you for the apology. I hold nothing against your character. You did something dumb - we all do. It just so happens that your dumb move was very public and occured at a time when people were voting on your maturity.
- I look forward to working with you in the future on Wikipedia. Kingturtle 03:02, 24 May 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Sumatra-Andaman Earthquake
It appears that the scientific community is settling on the name Sumatra-Andaman Earthquake for what Wikipedia called the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake.I added mention of this(noting this name's uniform use in a special cover-story section in the current issue of SCIENCE) and you reverted it.What's your problem?--Louis Epstein/le@put.com/12.144.5.2 19:15, 25 May 2005 (UTC)

[edit] history articles on wikipedia?
Hello,
I’m a historian working at the Center for History and New Media at George Mason University (http://chnm.gmu.edu/) and we are very interested in digital historical works, including people writing history on Wikipedia. We’d like to talk to people about their experiences working on articles in Wikipedia, in connection with a larger project on the history of the free and open source software movement. Would you be willing to talk with us about your involvement, either by phone, a/v chat, IM, or email? This could be as lengthy or brief a conversation as you wish.
Thanks for your consideration.

[edit] Category alphabetizing
Could you take a look at Category:Major league catchers? For the life of me, I can't figure out why John Buck, Ramon Castro and Iván Rodríguez aren't alphabetizing properly. MisfitToys 21:05, May 26, 2005 (UTC)
- Mark_ryan is submitting a bug report. It is an odd and curious thing. Kingturtle 01:17, 27 May 2005 (UTC)

[edit] uwe kils
thank you, kingturtle, we like your many contributions a lot. Aren't you willing to cooperate under your real name? That would be good for Wikipedia. Good luck UK 68.46.71.104 23:41, 26 May 2005 (UTC)
- I do not understand how using my real name would help wikipedia. please explain. Kingturtle 01:01, 27 May 2005 (UTC)
-
- We teach our students to always check for the sources, especially with content from the www, and that means people and how these names are fitted for the task. If there is testimony from third, independent sources, the better. That was the reason the oceanographers set up independent info about their teacher, and gave all the sources, as a future ancor for refs. Space is not a problem on wikipedia and people load only what they want to know, other than on a paper version. I am willing, as retired professor, to give course scripts to the Wikiversity idea of Eric Moeller (user:eloquence) for future online e-teaching and e-research, and for that it would be necessary to have a credential page for every teacher, like the one oceanographers produced. The more real names wikipedia has the better will be the reputation. And I am shure there will come a time when not the clitoris page is hit no 1 of future wikipedia. keep up with your fine work, I admire your input, with or without name, people like you are the soul of wikipedia

[edit] My RfA
I'm sort of disappointed with your vote. You voted oppose with the reason effectively stating "not been around long enough - wanting to see more contributions/involvement". You, in comparison, voted "SUPPORT" on Linuxbeak's RfA. Hes a great user, and i'm not making comparisons, but hes been around for three months - exactly the same as me. I hope you can reconsider your vote based on this, as it is inconsistent to give me an oppose and him a support. Hedley 19:01, 1 Jun 2005 (UTC)
- Experience is gained not only through time, but through participation. I am not at all saying that you don't participate. I just want to see more of it before I support you. Kingturtle 19:09, 1 Jun 2005 (UTC)
- Ok, thanks for the clarification. I'm active in IRC a lot and frequently on the mailing list, incase you want to know should I be on RfA in the future. Hedley 02:19, 2 Jun 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Hello!
[edit] Howdy
Hey thanks for the welcome to Wikipedia Kingturtle! I'm slowly doing a few edits here or there on this wonderful site.
I have a few questions in a wide range for you if thats ok:
- How did you find me? From the Recent Changes page?
- I read that you have a B.A. in Political Science. I'm graduating highschool June 3rd, 2005 and am considering taking either political science or accounting in college...any recommendations or thoughts?
- Do you ever get to have fun edits lately or is it all business now with just reverting edits and voting?

[edit] Thanks for the Useful Greeting
It's nice to be welcomed - but it was useful, too. I didn't realize that user pages existed, I had just been jumping in on articles where I saw something to fix or contribute. I must be doing something right - I just had one of my articles (which I originally wrote) posted to the copyright problems list. Led to a bunch of hurt feelings and fury that turned into a rewrite of the article in question. Now it is more appropriate for an encyclopedia. Knowing that I'd been welcomed made it easier to deal with being pronounced a copyright violator by somebody who seems to make a hobby of deleting articles. Thanks!

[edit] Please Help me Resolve Copyright Problem
I had a user flag a page I wrote Dive into Python as a copyright violation. From the template that comes up it's not exactly clear what the procedure is. I have:
- Added a note on the talk page certifying that I am the original author of the material and that I release it under the G??? license used here.
- Rewrote the article (I realized it was more informal & less encyclopedic) in the temp page Dive into Python/Temp
- Waited.
Now what? Does somebody have a responsibility for going through the copyright problems list and resolving / deleting pages? What's the process? Is there more that I'm supposed to do?
- John Elder 09:50, 8 Jun 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Today in History Pages
The idea of the project I'm building was initially to create a historical resource of events and date (that is, when the project started in the pre-wikipedia days of 1995-1996). However, over time it evolved into becoming more of a meta resource of specific events. What do I mean by a specific event: first, it has to be verifiable (agreement on dates and existence of the event by most people... this I accomplish by Googling the date or event name and finding what other people say). Secondly, it has to have survived the passage of time (I set that at a decade: if it's still considered important after a decade it goes in... there is one exception to this rule as I believe most people will remember it after a decade: 9/11/2001). In terms of people's birthdays, I've initially gone by names that were included in some dictionaries I had (I think I started with the dictionary of american culturacy).
As I said in the previous paragraph, the idea pre-dates wikipedia. What I found is some of the data in wikipedia actually came from my own DB (even down to the wording) but some of the content I had in my own DB did not make it into Wikipedia. I was left with two choices then:
- 1. look in wikipedia and remove the content that was infringing or
- 2. find a way to merge my stuff more fully into wikipedia (hence I would only maintain a subset of wikipedia's content). I started merging some of the content but realized that it would take me forever.
So I figured it was better to go with option 3, link wikipedia to my DB and let other people take care of that merging. That's what I was starting to do yesterday but someone mentionned on my message page that this was no good. I had done cross-linking through June 30th before I read the message but upon reading it decided to stop and wait until some other wikipedian would ask me to continue to do so (or go ahead and link themselves). In the meantime, I figured I would start working on some other entries I can contribute to. --TNLNYC 12:51, 9 Jun 2005 (UTC)
[edit] List of famous people with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder
I totally agree with your comment there, despite my sympathy with the initative that underlies this list (namely presenting ADHD as a good thing rather than a handicap). This list is just way too speculative for a serious encyclopedia. Would it be appropriate for me to intiate VfD, or would that be seen by the community as heavy-handed? Thanks, PhilipR 14:55, 9 Jun 2005 (UTC)
(reply to self) I just left a talk message for one other person from the "What links here". If they don't have an opinion, I'm ready to VFD. Cheers, PhilipR 16:27, 14 Jun 2005 (UTC)
[edit] What Constitutes Vandalism?
After moving some erroneous and self contradictory portions of the High Frequency Active Auroral Research Program to the talk page, and documenting why they were erroneous or did not belong in a Wikipedia article, user:ReSearcher left this message:
To JohnElder: Please stop removing content from Wikipedia. It is considered vandalism. Your talk comments have added nonsense as well. If you want to experiment, please use the sandbox. If you continue to vandalize pages, you will be blocked from editing Wikipedia. Thank you.
Did I engage in vandalism? Or merely a controversial edit - the entirety of the material was retained on the talk page, and my reasons for moving it were explained. That seems like the WP way to do things. I don't want to go about things the wrong way - so please let me know if I goofed. Sorry to be a "problem child." John Elder 21:13, 9 Jun 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Warning! Precedent for Speedy Deletion of School Stub and School Substubs!
The article here seems to be going up for SPEEDY deletion simply because it is a school! Deletionists cannot win in the VfD so this maybe a tactic to create a precedent for the speedy deletion of schools stub or school sub stubs! Please monitor this situation and the talk page at the Association of Inclusionist Wikipedians to discuss this issue.
Im my opinion SPEEDY deletion of school stubs and school substubs is inapproperate! --ShaunMacPherson 07:04, 22 Jun 2005 (UTC)
If you could could you spread the word to interested parties, I believe you are more familiar with the parties that wish to see school articles preserved better than I :). --ShaunMacPherson 07:04, 22 Jun 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Copyright Violations
It's nice to know you; I received your Welcome Message in June 3th. I found a "copyright violation" long time ago, that is, a German tennis player Tommy Haas. The First Edition includes copyright violation from ATP Official site, but someone added {{cleanup}}, not {{copyvio|url=http://www.atptennis.com/en/players/playerprofiles/Highlights/default.asp?playernumber=H355}}. I noticed it in January 2005, but I wasn't accustomed to Wikipedia Project then. I didn't know what {{cleanup}} meant. After 9 revision histories, This Edition removed copied sentences. What shall we do in this case? We can't leave such problematic histories, the previous nine. --Hhst 07:06, 26 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Dear Kingturtle, I ask this question to you because I couldn't find an easy answer elsewhere: I edited an article and saved it while I wasn't logged on, so the changes are not signed by my username but rather from my IP.
